Arizona Fall League
Albert Almora was the only Cub in the starting lineup as the 19-year-old played right-field in his second AFL game, helping the Mesa Solar Sox to a 8-1 win over Salt River. He went 2-5 with three RBI, a typical day at the plate for Almora. He grounded out to third in the first, flew out to left in the third, singled and scored in the fifth, grounded into a double play in the seventh, and cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the ninth. In two games, Almora is 6-10 with a double, triple, homer and 6 RBI.
Armando Rivero (0-0 0.00 ERA, 2 IP) made his second appearance pitching the ninth. After giving up a leadoff double off the glove of the first baseman. Rivero got the next hitter to pop up and then a line drive to short ended the game as the runner was doubled off second. He threw 14 pitches, 11 for strikes.
The Venezuelan League held it season opener and five Cubs pitching prospects are in the league. Yeiper Castillo (Daytona/Tennessee), Aguilas de Zulia; Yoanner Negrin (Iowa), Leones del Caracus; Loiger Pardon (Mesa/Boise), Leones del Caracus; Frank Del Valle (Daytona), Bravos de Margarita; and Eduardo Figueroa (Daytona/Tennessee), Tiburones de La Guaira are all pitching in the VWL.
Yoanner Negrin got the start for Caracas and was dominating with his 95 mph plus stuff. The Cuban right-hander tossed five shutout frames to earn the win. He fanned seven and allowed two hits and two walks in his 79-pitch effort. Negrin pitched for AAA Iowa in 2013 throwing 108 innings with 118 strikeouts and a 4.17 ERA.
Mexican Pacific League
The Mexican Winter league begins play on Friday and three Cubs prospects are playing in the league. Pitcher Marcus Hatley (Tennessee/Iowa) is pitching for Tomateros de Culiacan while David Villegas (Mesa) is throwing for Venados de Mazatlan. Christian Villanueva is playing third base for Yaquis de Obregon.
