Series Preview: Nats at Phillies

After dropping their opening series to the Mets 1-2, the Nationals are headed up North to Citizen's Bank Park to take on the Phillies who are also coming off of a 1-2 series loss to Boston. Here's how the pitching match ups shake out:

Friday, April 10, 7:05 PM, Citizens Bank Park

Gio Gonzalez (LHP) vs. Jerome Williams (RHP)

Gio Gonzalez will be making his first start of the season. In 2014, he accumulated a 3.57ERA and a 3.03FIP. Gio's K/9 was a solid 9.19 and he figures to have a strong start against the Phillies lineup. As always with Gio, the key for him will be to reduce the number of base runners he allows, notably via the walk.

Jerome Williams will be making his first start of the season against the Nationals. He has accumulated a 4.40ERA and a 4.52FIP in his career. Williams is a none to stellar starter going up against a fairly formidable lineup in the Nationals. This could be a good game for the Nationals offense, unless Williams comes up with some Orioles magic.

Cole Hamels had a rough start to the season and with the Phillies not yet ready to have a 5th starter and the usual off day after opening day, Hamels will get a second chance. In his first start of the season, Hamels allowed 4 earned runs in 5 frames. Hamels will look to successfully rebound against the Nationals.

The Phillies' man of mystery has been revealed as journeyman Sean O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan has thrown just 37.2 innings in the Major Leagues over the last two seasons and during those short stints he has an ERA just under 5 (4.46 FIP), with K/9's (4.5) and BB/9's (3.8) that are best described as Lannan-esque. In the minors his peripherals were a tick better, but he still sat at a career MiLB ERA of 3.97 over more than 1,000 IP. Looking at Pitchf/x O'Sullivan relies on his sinker while mixing in sliders and changeups fairly equally, and throwing in a straight fastball here and there. O'Sullivan hasn't had any meaningful interactions with current Nationals' batters.
