Nationals @ Mets 5/2/15

The Nationals lost to the mets to end their 3 game winning streak last night. The Nationals look to get back on track today against Jon Niese.

The Nationals had a pretty good stretch of games, picking up a 3 game winning streak after a Dan Uggla home run that turned things around in Atlanta. Unfortunately, Matt Harvey proved to be too much and the Nationals bullpen faltered, giving the Mets the 4-0 win. Today, it's a lefty/lefty matchup with Gio Gonzalez taking the hill at Citi Field and oppose Jon Niese in an attempt to even up the series.

Gio's last game against the Marlins was part of that awful series that saw the Nationals swept by a team that has no business sweeping anyone. Gio lasted only 5 frames and allowed 6 runs, all earned. Gio's ERA is at a mediocre 5.01, but his FIP tells a different story, sitting at 3.38. With a little help from the team and if Gio can keep his walks in control, this could be the game Gio needs to start getting himself together. Gio's done well against this current Mets team in 172 plate appearances, so let's hope that's a good formula for the Nationals today.

Niese, a staple of the Mets rotation for going on 8 seasons, has pretty much been Niese so far in 2015. The 28 year old lefty has a pretty low ERA (2.74), but an elevated FIP (4.95) when compared to his career averages, but most of his starts this year have been pretty good. His last game, which is hopefully the beginning of a trend, was particularly rough. He allowed 6 runs (4 earned) in 5 frames. The Nationals have seen NIese a lot, 201 plate appearances to be sure. In that time, the Nationals current roster sees him pretty favorably, let's hope these are the players we see at game time.
