Nationals vs. Cubs 6/6/15

The Nationals got back into the win column on Friday night with a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs did everything possible to fight their way back to victory after Danny Espinosa hit a 3 run bomb to give the Nationals the lead in the 2nd inning. They fought tooth and nail, with 2 homers from Anthony Rizzo and the team picking up 9 hits over the course of the game. Fortunately for the Nationals, it wasn't enough for them to ever take the lead over the Nationals. The bullpen did enough to get the job done, allowing only 1 earned run as the Nationals secured the victory. Today, the Nationals have promoted Joe Ross to the big leagues and sent A.J. Cole to the minors. They will face an old nemesis in Jason Hammel, who always seems to get the best of the Nationals. Today is a good of a day as any to change the course of fate.

Jason Hammel has been around since 2006 and he has a decent 10 season resume to speak of. The thing is that he's never been a lights out kind of guy and he's not exactly a game changer, unless he faces the Nationals. Hammel is just one of those pitchers that the Nationals can never seem to beat, no matter what. In fact, he has a perfect 1.000 win percentage against the Nationals having gone 8-0 career against the Nationals. Hammel isn't a terrible pitcher, but he is not good enough for that to be reasonable. Any way, Hammel has 159 plate appearances against the Nationals and they have a .658 OPS against the Cubs right hander.

The Nationals have promoted Joe Ross to the Major Leagues from Double A Harrisburg for today's game. The 22 year old right hander was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round (25th overall) of the 2011 draft. He was traded to the Nationals prior to the 2015 season in a 3 team trade that involved Steven Souza and Trea Turner as well as others. Ross has done well for himself in the minor leagues and especially so this year. Take a look at his numbers, most notably his numbers from Harrisburg this year to get an idea of how well he's done. HIs 2015 are definitely worthy of the promotion he's received today.
