Nationals @ Brewers 6/11/15

The Nationals ended their skid with a win over the Yankees in extra innings. Now they head into Milwaukee to face the last place Brewers.

The Nationals managed to end their 3 game losing streak thanks to an 8th inning 2 run homer from Michael Taylor, then they won it thanks to some lucky breaks and some hustle from Denard Span. The Nationals are back in 1st place despite their struggles so far in June and now would be a great time to put a little bit of space between themselves and the 2nd place Mets. Tonight, Roark will take the hill in Milwaukee opposing Matt Garza in the series opener.

Tanner Roark has been doing well this season and he's done just as well when he began making starts. So far this season, Roark has put together a 3.16 ERA, but something of an elevated 5.73 FIP. In seasons past, Roark has been pretty steady for the Nationals and they could really use that from him tonight. Roark is a big command guy, so he needs to do his best to keep the ball in the yard at the offense friendly Miller Park. Roark has a very small sampling of plate appearances against the Brewers, so take these high numbers with a grain of salt. Hopefully, they don't mean anything during tonight's game.

Matt Garza has always been a pretty good pitcher, but he's got a little bit of a hair trigger with his temperament. He's been on a bit of a decline over the last couple of years and his current 5.09 ERA and he's had a declining K/9 over his last 2 seasons. The fact remains that Garza can still have a good game and if he's on he'll be dynamite tonight. Garza's last game is a good example that saw him going 7 innings, allowing only 1 run, walking none, and striking out 3. Garza has had 98 plate appearances against the Nationals, and he's done fairly well in those appearances.
