Good Morning Natstown 6/22/15

Welcome to the Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer show.

Max Scherzer and Bryce Harper have a combined 9.1 fWAR. The entire rest of the team is at 11.4. Nearly half the Nationals team fWAR is comprised of Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer. By fWAR Bryce Harper is the best position player in baseball and Max Scherzer the best pitcher. Sometimes it's good to just sit back and realize what we're watching. I know it can be frustrating when you want your favorite team to just go and not look back and they won't do that for you but the Nationals have two players having historic seasons and they are reason enough to get out to the ballpark.

As far as the weekend went. Max Scherzer pitched a no-hitter that was one strike and an elbow away from being a perfect game. Max Scherzer has given up one hit in his last 18 innings and his impressive season keeps getting more impressive. Max Scherzer has stabilized the Nats pitching staff against a series of unforeseen incidents. No one thought Strasburg would suddenly drop off to the degree he did or that Jordan Zimmermann would struggle with velocity issues or that Doug Fister would end up on the DL for a time. Scherzer has been everything that an Ace is supposed to be and he's the glue holding this rotation together until they can get healthy and headed in the right direction.

Likewise Bryce Harper has done the same for the Nationals line-up. Thursday evening when Bryce Harper was laying on the ground in pain it was easy to imagine the Nationals season coming to an end. Bryce Harper is the key to everything and the reason the Nationals offense is as good as it is despite missing Werth and Zimmerman and dealing with Desmond's struggles and Rendon still working his way back from injury. Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer are having historic seasons but that is what the Nationals need since most everything else around them has not gone right.

Plans don't always come together and that is why superstar players are so important. With all the Nationals injuries and struggles they have no business being in first place in their division, but they are because of Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer. Then imagine where this team would be without them argument has never held so much weight. Bryce Harper really is baseball's LeBron dragging this bunch to first place. If they ever do get healthy this could be a real dangerous team, but first they have to get healthy.

James O'Hara once argued with a guy that the Nats shouldn't trade Bryce Harper for Chase Utley and Ben Revere and then inspired his friend to write a column about it.
