Nationals @ Pirates 7/23/15

The Nationals took the series to the Mets and now they head into Pittsburgh ready to take on the Pirates.

The Nationals scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take the win over the Mets and seal the deal on victory yesterday afternoon at Nationals Park. The Nationals did themselves a big favor by winning 2 out of 3 from the team trailing them in the standings. Now, the Nationals are headed into Pittsburgh where they will take on the Pirates for the first time since June 21st when they completed the sweep over their NL central opponent at the beginning of an 8 game winning streak. Tonight, Doug Fister will take the hill as the visitor, while Francisco Liriano will take the mound for the home team.

Doug Fister's had a little more fun in his career then he has in his last couple of starts. Currently his ERA sits at 4.30, nearly a run higher than his career norm. He's also spent some time on the DL, so it goes without saying he's had better seasons. That being said, he's had some games this season that have still been quite good. Hopefully tonight he'll be able to channel some of the real Doug Fister. He's had some good success against the Pirates in 80 PAs, so it could be a good night for him and the Nationals.

Francisco Lirano has had a nice season so far in 2015 and he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down. Every time he takes the hill he gives his team a good chance to pick up a win. His weakness are the walks he often allows and if the Nationals can take advantage of this fact they will be able have the upper hand over the Pirates tonight. The Nationals have only 46 PAs against Liriano, but in that time he's allowed so little to the Nationals maybe it is time for some equalization.
