Ryan Zimmerman, the Nationals' first pick in the recent amateur draft, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his pro debut on Tuesday. His appearance came for the A Savannah Sand Gnats in their 3-1 loss to Charleston.
Zimmerman made contact in his first at bat, grounding out to the pitcher in the first inning. He struck out swinging in the fourth, grounded to third in the sixth and looked at a called third strike leading off the eighth. The third baseman did handle three ground balls without a hitch.
J. J. Davis went three for four to lead AAA New Orleans past Oklahoma on Monday night. His two-run blast in the top of the ninth broke a 5-5 tie and Joe Horgan got the save in the 7-5 win.
Horgan had to work his way out of a self-created jam, however, to preserve the win. He came in to start the ninth inning and, after retiring the first two batters, Horgan walked a batter. Oklahoma followed up with a pair of singles to load the bases, but Horgan induced Jace Brewer to hit a ground ball to third and the game was over.
Joey Eischen, with the Zephyrs on a rehab assignment, pitched the first inning and allowed a run on three hits. It was his second single-inning start for New Orleans in three days. He's allowed four hits and just the one run and has struck out two.
In A Potomac, the Nationals got news that they will have a fourth representative to the Carolina League All Stars. Third baseman Kory Casto got the nod after another player was called up to AA. Casto is batting .271 with nine home runs and 42 RBI. He celebrated by going two for four with a triple and a home run in Potomac's 8-4 loss to Wilmington.
Mike Hinckley started the game and continued to struggle, allowing four runs in six and a third innings of work. That brought his ERA up to 5.28 in nine starts for the P-Nats this year.
