Q&A with Terry Byrom

It is quite possible that no one saw more of the 2005 Harrisburg Senators than their radio broadcaster, Terry Byrom. With that in mind, we caught up with Terry for an in depth Q&A session to discuss his views of the 2005 squad.

CapitolDugout.com: First, you saw a lot of Armando Galarraga this year obviously. What exactly do you believe the Nationals are losing by dealing him from your perspective?

Terry Byrom: Armando joined the Senators about halfway through the season and in his first few starts was virtually un-hittable. He had a great mound presence and didn't seem to let anything get to him. If he put a couple of base runners on, he would get a double play ball. Everything worked for him quite well. He then hit a dry stretch which could have been because of the innings he threw between Potomac and Harrisburg, or it could have been anything. But, by his last start or two he was back to throwing fairly well.

I'm not a scout or a crystal ball reader, but I certainly think he has a chance to make a contribution at the big league level. As we've all seen in following players over the years, making it there is more than just being talented, it's a combination of many attributes.

CapitolDugout.com: Which pitchers from this year's squad did you see the highest ceiling for?

Terry Byrom: This is a difficult question to answer, but of the pitchers that were here for more than just a short time, I'd say Darrell Rasner.

CapitolDugout.com: Of all the hitting prospects you saw pass through Harrisburg this year, which ones do you think could make the biggest impact on the MLB level?

Terry Byrom: The first and easiest answer is Ryan Zimmerman. A couple of other guys that come to mind are Edgar Gonzalez, Cristian Guerrero, Dee Haynes, Josh Labandeira, and Larry Broadway. I think all of these guys have a chance to make an imprint in the major leagues. Gonzalez is a guy that is steady at the plate and found some power this year, while also hitting for a decent average. Guerrero really put it all together from May 1st on and it will be fun to follow him this year, presumably in New Orleans. He has all the tools to be a great player, and although he's been around a while in a few different organizations, sometimes guys just click. Plus Frank Cacciatore (our hitting coach) really worked with him and I think it paid off. Dee Haynes has had great success at all the minor league levels. He's a hard worker, has a great attitude, and is a great person. He's easy to root for, that's for sure. I think all he needs is a shot with someone. Labandeira and Broadway were both injured this year, but they have both been highly thought of by the organization and I would expect they'll both "make it" eventually.

CapitolDugout.com: Ryan Zimmerman is obviously the top-hitting prospect in the Washington organization. What are your thoughts on him from what you saw?

Terry Byrom: Most of the first thoughts that come to mind are about him and the fact that he's just so humble and really fit in. A lot of guys, in his position, don't come in as a "mouse." I mean that a lot of guys want to be brash, be loud, I'm the number 1 pick etc., but Ryan came in and figured out quickly he could learn things from both on the field and in preparation. He was a pleasure to be around. As for his talent, everyone seems to think he's a can't miss prospect and let's hope so. I certainly think he's going to be everything everyone expects and more.

CapitolDugout.com: What were your impressions of Darrell Rasner? What type of repertoire does he bring to the mound with him?

Terry Byrom: The thing I hear more often than not from pitching coaches is that it's not really about what pitches a guy throws, but what his demeanor is on the mound and how he deals with failure as well as success. Darrell is the type of guy that every fifth day he was ready to go. And it didn't matter if he'd gone through a couple of bad outings or great outings. He was always ready. He never seemed to get too high or too low, either during a game or between starts. He definitely has good stuff too. His fastball hit in the lower 90s and he has a curve ball that he can throw for a strike at any time. With any player at this level, or any level, it's all about consistency.

CapitolDugout.com: Who would you say was the team sleeper of 2005? Is there anyone flying under the radar so to speak?

Terry Byrom: To a certain degree, I would have to say David Maust. I'm sure no one expected him to have the numbers he had as a starter with us, and to do it over a prolonged period of time. But as I said before, sometimes it just takes a guy a while to have everything click. David is a guy that really has to hit his spots etc., but did that for the Senators this year. David is another guy that will be a lot of fun to follow this season.

CapitolDugout.com: Cristian Guerrero has long been touted as having big time tools. Do you view him as a future big league starter and are his tools still as good as people once thought they were?

Terry Byrom: He's certainly a guy that if he fulfills his promise and can get all the tools working together, someone would find a spot for him. He's completely in control of that. He will either find consistency and improve upon this season, or he won't. If he does, I think the sky's the limit.

CapitolDugout.com: Larry Broadway's stock has dropped slightly as a prospect. How would you describe him as the total player and do you still view him as a legitimate MLB first baseman?

Terry Byrom: This is difficult for me because I've only seen Larry this season and because of his knee, he certainly wasn't at 100% or probably even 75%. But, he flashed very good leather around the bag at first base and by the end of the season he was hitting for more power and average, and he had a good fall league. So, I think he's feeling better and the knee is getting stronger. I certainly think if the knee continues to improve and he gets more comfortable with that, that he could be a MLB first baseman.

CapitolDugout.com: You've seen a lot of the things from the booth, but what player put together the best single game performance of 2005 in your opinion?

Terry Byrom: We had a three-homer game out of Dee Brown and eight four-hit games, but the best games that stick out in my mind are two dominating pitching performances by David Maust. On August 16th at home vs. Bowie, he through a complete game, three-hit shutout striking out eight and walking one. Just nine days later he through another complete game at home against Erie allowing just four hits and a run while striking out seven. And the start in between those two was a six-inning outing at Binghamton, where he struck out ten, walked one, and allowed just two runs. That's three awfully good starts in a row.

CapitolDugout.com: From your vantage point, do you see the farm system headed in the right direction based on the team Harrisburg fielded in 2005?

Terry Byrom: This is a difficult question to answer for me since I've only been the broadcaster here for a season. The Expos certainly had a great reputation for churning out prospects. Given the recent drafts and prospects being developed like Ryan Zimmerman this year; Bill Bray and Ian Desmond in 2004; Chad Cordero and Kory Casto in 2003; and Darrell Rasner, Larry Broadway, Jason Bergmann, and Danny Rueckel in 2002 it seems the farm system is in good shape and producing. Not just the farm system, but the scouting department as well. Last year, when Jim Bowden was hired, he made the farm system a priority again.

As for the team in Harrisburg being a measuring stick for me, that's difficult as well because the Nationals seem to put a priority on the Senators winning with free agent signings and various player moves. But having seen Zimmerman, Bray, Rasner, Broadway, Bergmann, and Rueckel, yes, I'd say the farm system is beginning to move in the right direction.

CapitolDugout.com: Are there any other players that you haven't already mentioned that stand out in your mind for specific accomplishments, performances, or raw tools?

Terry Byrom: A couple of players that haven't been mentioned come to mind, Melvin Dorta and Dan Dement. Dorta started the season on the bench as the proverbial utility man, but soon worked his way into the line up and stayed there most of the year. He started at every position but pitcher and catcher, and played them all well. He made only nine errors in 121 games. He also batted .252 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs. He was steady all year and seemed to come up with the big hit when the Senators needed one.

Dement played in 71 games for the Senators and made just one error, while playing all three outfield positions, first base and second base. He batted .328 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs but stayed under the radar most of the time he was with the Senators. Not only were both these guys surprises on the field, they were both great guys to be around.

CapitolDugout.com would like to thank Terry Byrom for his time and efforts in answering these questions.
