Roberts' 3-run blast leads O's over Rays

The O's used a 3-run blast from Brian Roberts to defeat the Rays 3-1.

In lieu of Brian Matusz's strained intercostals muscle injury, Chris Tillman got tonight's start. Jeremy Accardo recorded the win while James Shields was pegged with the loss in the Orioles 3-1 over the Rays.

Tonight's starting lineup was almost identical as last night's with the exception of Luke Scott being moved up. It was as follows:

Last season, Tillman went 2-5 with a 5.87 ERA in his 11 starts. Tonight, he went six innings, facing 21 batters, and leaving the game with a no-hitter. He threw 101 pitches, 58 for strikes. Tillman stuck out five and walked three. He was given the no decision.

Jeremy Accardo made his Orioles debut when he came in to pitch in the seventh inning as relief. Oriole pitchers allowed no runs and only three hits in 14 innings until Accardo gave up a single to B.J. Upton. Upton then stole second and the intentional pass to Matt Joyce. With two outs, Kelly Shoppach blooped a hit to left field. Pie relayed to home to get Upton for the third out.

James Shields came into the game with a 7-4 lifetime record and 3.83 ERA against the Birds. He went seven and a third innings, giving up four hits with two walks and seven strikes outs. He threw 102 pitches with 67 as strikes.

Jake McGee came in as relief and gave up a three run home run to the first batter he faced, Brian Roberts. After striking out Markakis, McGee was taken out for Kyle Farnsworth, who gave up a hit to Lee before getting Guerrero to fly out .

In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Gonzalez came in, giving up two walks and recording one out. Koji Uehara then relieved him. He struck out pinch hitter, Sam Fuld, before allowing Manny Ramirez an RBI single. Uehara recorded the final out of the eighth on a Dan Johnson ground out.

Kevin Gregg came into to close, getting his first save of the season. After giving up a single to Upton and getting Joyce to hit into a fielder's choice, Gregg walked Joyce. He then struck out Elliot Johnson looking. Nick Markakis robbed Zobrist to record the final out of the game.

Noise was made throughout the lineup. The first three hitters had four hits while the middle and bottom three has one hit a piece. Brian Roberts went 2-4, increasing his average to .375, and has 5 RBIs on the season.

Zach Britton is slated to make his major league debut tomorrow as the O's go for the sweep against Wade Davis and the Rays in the series finale.
