Key's top Dash behind huge night by Drake

The Frederick Keys topped Winston-Salem 4-2 behind a stellar pitching performance by Oliver Drake.

L.J. Hoes

On Drake's performance

“He did a great job throwing strikes pounding the zone with his fastball and keeping them off balance with his off speed stuff. It was a great all-around team performance tonight.”

On Drake setting down 22 in a row and if this was the best performance he has seen from him

“This was definitely one of the better performances I have seen him have. He is definitely improving a lot the last two years. The command of his fastball and him throwing his split finger and curveball he really kept those guys off balance. I mean there are a couple guys on that team with eight of nine home runs and to hold them to zero runs in eight innings; he did a great job.”

On his two hit performance

“I mean definitely it was a team thing you know with out Oliver [Drake] being there we wouldn't have been in that situation. Their pitcher did a great job too I don't know how many hits we had off them but keeping us to two runs you know he did a great job too.”

Felt good hitting that home run ball hard tonight

[Laughs] “Yea, it did it really felt good I got a good pitch to hit I wasn't trying to do too much. I wasn't trying to crush the ball or anything just wanted to put a nice easy swing on it. I was actually trying to move [Mummey] but I saw a pitch that was inside and turned on it.”

Orlando Gomez

On Drake's dominance on the mound shutting down 22 Dash hitters in a row after the first inning

“He threw really well, kept pitches down after the first inning and he located well. He makes pitches with his breaking ball, split finger and he pitched ahead of the hitters.”

On confidence factor for Drake after rough Bowie stint

“Well he pitched well too the other day in relief against these same guys. This builds our confidence too because we really needed someone to go deep today. He went eight innings and saved our team tomorrow.”

On if this was the best performance he has seen from Drake

“It was the best, I mean he has pitched great games for us before and everything but tonight he was in total control of the game. He and Ward got on the same page and it was outstanding.”

On L.J. Hoes

“Very important getting two big hits like that. I saw that we won the game in the first inning with the relay. Abreu made a nice throw to Hoes and threw to ward and got the out at home.”

On Hoes approach at the plate since the recent road trip

“He's more patient at the plate because he is not trying to muscle the ball. He is staying with pitches. At the beginning he was kind of rushing at the plate. He just wanted to do well. He wanted to do well because he wants to move on in the game quick. Also, he was rocking his top hand and he had some trouble using his top hand. He had trouble with the whip because his hand was locked.”

Oliver Drake

On his performance

“Tried to get ahead early, throw all my pitches for strikes and keep the hitters off balance.”

On his level of confidence with this outing after the rough Bowie start

“I was just able to stick to what I wanted to do and control my game plan. Just glad I was able to execute and just want to keep building off that.”

On the great relay play to end the jam in first inning

“It was awesome man I mean Miggy picked it off and made the throw in, nice relay right to the plate, Ward was able to block him and I was just able to build off that. We fortunately held them off and put up some runs and got the win.”

On of this was his best performance in Frederick

“It's one of them I was really happy and consistent the whole time threw a lot of pitches. I basically threw all my pitches for strikes and I was really able to execute on all my pitches when I needed to.”

On a possible difference between the first inning and the rest of the outing

“I mean nothing really they just put the bat on some pitches and fell in. After that it was just keeping them off balance. I went out there and did what I wanted to do and throw strikes and they jumped on a couple pitches and that happens sometimes.”
