ITO interviews the Orioles 9th round pick Devin Jones, a junior pitcher from Miss. State. Jones pitched in 17 games this season, eight of them as starts. He went 2-5 with a 4.45 ERA. Mississippi State heads into the Super Regionals in Gainesville this weekend. Previously, Jones had been drafted out of high school by the Cleveland Indians.

Insidetheos.com: Tell us what is going through you mind about being selected by the Orioles

Devin Jones: I had actually just gotten out of practice and headed home. I was on the phone to another pitcher. Shortly thereafter I got a call from coach and was definitely excited. I have to start thinking about super regionals. We leave tomorrow and that's what I'm focused on now.

ITO: Were you surprised it was the Orioles that selected you? Had you and the Orioles talked much before the draft?

Jones: Not really. I talked to them a little bit. They really liked what I have to offer. I kind of expected wasn't but wasn't sure when it would happen.

ITO: Do you have any idea what the Orioles organization or farm system is like?

Jones: A little bit. Not a whole bunch-just from hearsay from our athletic trainer. He was in the system and says I'll have a good time and be taken care of.

ITO: What type of pitches do you throw and at what speeds? What are your strengths and what do you need to work on the most?

Jones: My fastball-I have a four seam around 94-96 mph and a two seam from 90-92 mph.I throw a slider about 83-86 mph. That's kind of been my out pitch. I've been working on change up around 85. My strengths-I think I have a real healthy arm and a lot to bring as far as talent level. I want to work on body build. I'm 6'2” and want to get up to 200 lb. range and find role that best suits me.

ITO: Did you have a favorite player growing up or a favorite team?

Jones: Not really. I just watched the game and pulled whatever I could from watching TV. I used to watched a lot of guys from closers to starters. I'm just a fan of the game-not really a team or player.

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Jones: Probably this year when I got brought in and we down by four and pitched five innings. We ended up coming back to win and secure spot in regionals. I feel like that really pushed me forward.

ITO: Are you looking to sign quickly and get your professional career started right away?

Jones: I am looking to get signed pretty quickly. If everything turns out right and get my feet wet as much as possible and learn as much as possible in the short time.

ITO: What do you think you will bring to the Orioles organization?

Jones: A good energy and a lot of determination. I determined to ultimately reach the majors and I feel I can perform in any situation because I've done it all. I feel like they can count on me in any situation possible. I want to be consistently effective in whatever position they put me in.
