Q&A 14th Round Pick, K.J. Hockaday

ITO interviews the Orioles 14th round draft pick K.J. Hockaday from John Carroll in Maryland. Hockaday is committed to Maryland.

InsidetheO's: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the Orioles?

Hockaday: It has been a dream of mine ever since I was 3 years old. I am glad they drafted me and giving me opportunity. Hopefully by the end of the summer we can reach terms with a contract.

ITO: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Orioles?

Hockaday: I was a shortstop in high school and can play anywhere. I See myself playing as a 3B or corner outfielder but the main reason why the Orioles liked me was because of my hitting ability.

ITO: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Orioles' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Hockaday: I don't like comparing myself to any great player but I have heard people say that I swing like A-Rod and that I model myself after him on the baseball field.

ITO: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Orioles or were you surprised they selected you?

Hockaday: During the draft around the sixth round the Astros offered me money and I turned them down just because it wasn't the right situation for me. The O's explained to me that I would get drafted later and they picked me and I am very blessed.

ITO: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Hockaday: That is there decision. I just mainly want to play baseball and play for the Orioles and wherever they place me is where I will play.

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Hockaday: I Played for Baltimore Buzz up in a tournament in Minnesota. We ended up winning it. We beat the Astros which was one of the more premiere systems in the league. I started playing for them when I was nine years old and we won when I was 14. I have also just played in different wreck leagues around the area.

ITO: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Hockaday: My team was definitely the Baltimore Orioles. I wear #8 on my back and Cal's son played on the Buzz team with me and he showed me a lot about the game.

ITO: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Orioles? Is it going to be an immediate sign or could it be a process?

Hockaday: It is going to be a little bit of a process. There is no money given yet, but after the summer season they will offer me a deal. The season plans to end in late July.

ITO: Anyone in particular you want to thank in terms of getting drafted?

Hockaday: I definitely want to send a special thank you to Danny Taylor, who helped me and let me use his facility at the Harford Sports Academy.
