Q&A 47th Round Pick, Devon Conley

ITO interviews the Orioles 47th round pick, Devon Conley, a centerfielder from New Mexico JC. This season, Conley, hit .359 with two homeruns and 31 RBIs.

InsidetheOs: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the Orioles?

Devon Conley: Relieved, I had an idea I would, I just didn't know when or where. Just finally hearing name felt good. I was there with just my family. I was in New Mexico with my mom.

ITO: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Orioles?

Conley: I bring a lot of speed to the table. I definitely possess quickness and defense and I know that's one thing I always had and always will.

ITO: How comfortable are you at the plate?

Conley: I think with time facing the better pitching it will become a lot easier. I am able to make adjustments. It should be fun competing with everybody on a consistent basis.

ITO: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Orioles' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Conley: I like watching Torri Hunter. I like his defensive game, running and getting to everything.

ITO: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Orioles or were you surprised they selected you?

Conley: They were one of two teams I thought would take me. A Pirates guy called me and asked about my signability.

ITO: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Conley: Yea, I feel defensively that I am good enough to be there (centerfield).

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Conley: As of right now winning the state championship, I hit a grand slam and it was most exciting moment in the final game. It was the state championship game.

ITO: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Conley: It was the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter. When I was younger I played infield he was my favorite player. I played shortstop. Just consistently how die hard a player he is. There is no reason to not like Derek Jeter. He was also on the Yankees so that's why.

ITO: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Orioles? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

Conley: I plan to look into my offers and if they can give me what I want then I will take the deal and start playing.
