Q&A 50th Round Pick, Brendan Butler

ITO interviews the Orioles 50th round pick, OF Brendan Butler from John Carroll. Butler is high school teammates with the Orioles 14th round pick, K.J. Hockaday.

InsidetheOrioles: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the Orioles?

Brendan Butler: Well I was on my way to my game I knew there was a chance but I wasn't expecting much. I got a text from my mom and thought it was sweet. I played with or against the 14th round pick KJ Hockaday since I was six or seven years old.

ITO: Talk about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Orioles?

Butler: I played third and outfield. I mainly play LF but I can play any OF position.

ITO: What are your strengths and your weaknesses?

Butler: I am comfortable defensively wherever they put me. I see the ball great and pretty comfortable at the plate. Like the ball up as a right handed hitter and am good at hitting the ball to all fields.

ITO: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Orioles' fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Butler: I always liked Cal Ripken and I love Derek Jeter because he hustles and plays great. Outfield wise Sammy Sosa was always a hustler and working hard.

ITO: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Orioles or were you surprised they selected you?

Butler: Basically just the Orioles, another couple teams talked to my coach but the O's were what I was expecting.

ITO: Do you see yourself staying at the same position or do you think you'll be moved to another position?

Butler: Either third or first I am comfortable there. I played there all through high school. I will probably end up in Outfield because of speed but they like me at 3B as well.

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Butler: In high school, this year we made the playoffs for the first time in 13 years. Last year we played Calvert Hall and beat them for the first time in ten years. I went 3-3 with a homerun and two doubles. It was a pretty great experience.

ITO: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Butler: I played against Cal Ripken's son so my favorite team was the Orioles

ITO: Would you like to give a special thanks to anyone?

Coach Joe Stetka for everything he has down for me the last few years.
