Q&A 24th Round Pick, Jalen Simmons

ITO interviews the Orioles 24th round pick, right fielder Jalen Simmons from Camden County High School in Georgia.

InsidetheOs: Tell us what it feels like to be selected by the Orioles.

Jalen Simmons: It was very exciting. He (Arthur McConnehead, the local area scout) one of the first people to ever come watch me play up at the high school. He told me he liked my tools and everything. Then he called me and asked me if I was willing to take the money they wanted to give me and I wanted to play baseball so I told him yea, they drafted me and I got excited.

ITO: Talk to us about your game a little bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Orioles?

Simmons: I really didn’t play baseball my junior year of high school. I just played this year to have some fun. I am more of a hitting for average guy, but I do have a little bit of power in me. I like to play the game the way it is supposed to be played. I not a taunt type of guy or a show a team up type, I just like to play the game the way it is supposed to be played.

ITO: What other sports did you play in high school?

Simmons: I played football all four years. My scholarship at Presbyterian was for football. I played three years of high school baseball but this year was my first year of varsity.

ITO: What are your strengths defensively?

Simmons: Arm strength and speed because of outfield. I have a pretty good arm. I think I am pretty solid

ITO: What are you weaknesses defensively?

Simmons: Taking that year off kind of hurt me a little bit.

ITO: Do you know what your stats were for the season?

Simmons: My coach said my batting average was .440 and I had three homeruns and alot of doubles

ITO: Who would you compare your game to at the Major League level so the Orioles’ fans have an idea of what your game is like?

Simmons: I certainly can’t compare my game to the major league guys, but one of the guys at the Orioles workout said I look alot like Jermaine Dye.

ITO: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Orioles or was that a surprise?

Simmons: I was expecting to be drafted by them. Either them or a couple other teams that I had talked with. I was not sure what round I would be drafted in, I just knew I would be drafted. I was watching the internet. I plugged my computer up to my t.v. and was watching MLB.com and saw my name come up on the t.v. and was very happy.

ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

Simmons: My second game of the season we were playing Bolles of Florida and it was the fifth inning and we were down three runs and I ended up getting a grandslam to win the game and then came in to pitch and shut them down the last two innings.

ITO: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?

Simmons: I didnt have a favorite team I just liked baseball in general. My favorite player would have to be B.J. Upton or Jason Heyward. All together though it would be Hank Aaron.

ITO: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted by the Orioles? Is it your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?

SImmons: I havent really decided yet, I want to start playing right now but there are alot of things you have to take into consideration.

ITO: Is there anyone you would like to thank for helping you get to where you are today?

Simmons: I really want to thank my family for everything they have done for me and all of their love. Especially my mom, sister and family. You are all near and dear to me and mean alot.
