A tall and lean shortstop, that's what Manny Machado presents to the eye. That's what Cal Ripken was also. And Mr. Ripken redefined the physical requirements of the position. Machado has also drawn comparisons to Alex Rodriguez
, and if he performs as well, the Orioles will be justly rewarded for their $5.25 million investment in this elite prospect. Machado has a long way to go to reach Camden Yards, and like any young shortstop the only way he will progress is to stay healthy and play. His best tools are his bat and arm strength which make one think he will be an offensive minded shortstop when he reaches the majors, hence the Rodriguez comparisons. He has a nice level swing and great bat speed that produces solid hits when he connects. As he fills out, his power should improve as will the possibility that he will change positions. If he outgrows the shortstop position, his offensive production will enable him to make the move to third without missing a beat. Not possessed with blazing speed, he is an above average base runner, but he does have good footwork and agility which enables his play at short. In his age 18 season, Machado has exploded onto the scene at Frederick where he homered in his Carolina League debut. Right now, based upon his age and the league he is playing in, he is ahead of schedule. He has suffered a bit of a drop off at the plate, but for an 18 year old playing in Frederick, he is holding his own. The Orioles seem to want him to face the higher level of competition at HI A ball.
