Season Stats: .246, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 31 SB
Wednesday Stats: 2-4, HR, 4 RBI
The Keys earned a 6-2 victory on the strength of a towering three-run HR in the fifth inning by Abreu that gave the Keys a two-run lead after trailing 1-0.
Abreu, 26, has spent most of his time this season with the Frederick Keys playing in 85 games. The outfielder has spend minimal time in Bowie and Norfolk this season putting up less than stellar numbers but has played well offensively and defensively for the Keys.
The native out of Ponce, Puerto Rico is hitting only .247 in the month of August with his only home run of the month Wednesday and 13 RBI. Abreu's homer Wednesday was on a 1-1 changeup that was left up in the zone that he just pulled out of the park to left-field. He said he was looking to stay back on a change up as the pitcher threw it the previous pitch.
The Keys are in the midst of playing 28 games in a row and has seen some rest during that span to keep fresh as the team is heading towards the playoffs and a chance at a Carolina League championship.
Game Quotes from Miguel Abreu
On his perspective on the home run pitch
"I was feeling horrible after the first two at bats because I struck out twice." I just took a good swing and stayed waiting for his change-up. It was a good swing and the ball was out of the park."
On how he felt after hitting it
"It was great! I was waiting, waiting, waiting and I read the pitcher's mind; we were on the same page; I got him."
On taking advantage of the opportunity and the approach of the home run at bat
"Everybody in this league knows we are a free swinging team. You go down the order three, four, five and six we don't want to take a lot of good pitches. We don't see many fastballs over the middle of the plate so right now everyone is trying to stay back and its hard. I love the first pitch."
