Four Oriole Prospects on AFL Roster

Four of the Baltimore Orioles prospects have been assigned to the AFL's Mesa Solar Sox.

The preliminary rosters for the Arizona Fall League were released yesterday by Major League Baseball. Currently, there are five players from the Orioles farm system that have been assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox.

They include, from:

Norfolk: Right handed reliever Sean Gleason

Bowie: Right handed pitcher Chorye Spoone, first baseman Joe Mahoney, outfielder Xavier Avery

Frederick: Catcher Brian Ward

The Mesa Solar Sox will be managed by Joe McEwing. McEwing is the manager of the Chicago White Sox Triple-A affiliate, the Charlotte Knights. Mesa's hitting coach will be Jeff Branson, who is currently the hitting coach for the Pirates Triple-A team, the Indianapolis Indians. The pitching coach will be Steve Mintz who serves as the pitching coach for the Minnesota Twins Single-A affiliate Fort Myers Miracle.

The Arizona Fall League is comprised of six teams that play Monday through Saturday either at 12:35 or 6:35. The season starts October 4th and runs through November 17th. They will play a total of 38 games. The Mesa Solar Sox are comprised of players from the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gleason played the majority of the season with the Frederick Keys before being called up to Triple-A Norfolk. At Frederick, Gleason was 1-3 with a 4.53 ERA. He appeared in 50 games, pitched 47.2 innings, struck out 58, walked 19 and earned 32 saves. While with Norfolk, Gleason has appeared in six games, he has pitched 6.2 innings, has a 6.75 ERA and is 0-1.

Spoone began the season in Norfolk as a starting pitcher, going 2-1 with a 5.50 ERA starting eight games. Spoone was then sent to Bowie in which he split time as a relief pitcher and starter. He is currently 5-5 with a 4.09 ERA and a save. He has appeared in 21 games with 11 of them being starts. Spoone has struck out 61 and walked 38 at Bowie.

Ward has appeared in 99 games with the Frederick Keys. He is batting .252 with seven homers and 30 RBIs. He has walked 41 times and struck out 50. He also has nine stolen bases.

Mahoney appeared in three games for Frederick and hit .500 with two RBIs in eight plate appearances before being called up to Bowie. At Bowie, Mahoney is hitting .283 with 10 homers and a team high 61 RBIs. His slugging percentage is .495 and he has a .839 OPS

Avery has spent the entire season with Bowie and is batting .264 with four homers, 26 RBIs with 35 stolen bases. He was a EAS Mid-Season All-Star.
