Background

The Orioles second round selection in 2009, Givens was drafted out of Plant High School. The 21-year-old will be entering his third full season in the big leagues.

Givens pitched primarily in high school, but has played shortstop to this point with the Orioles organization.

In two different levels in 2011, Givens hit .243 with one home run and 45 RBI. He has work to do in order to become a successful hitter down the line.

Scouting Report

Givens might be better off as a pitcher. He has arguably one of the best arms in the system for a positional player. In high school his fastball touched at 97 mph.

Second base might be the more realistic position for the Florida native because he lacks range and instinct. He will commit fewer errors if he sticks to second and still make the accurate throws.

Offensively, Givens needs more time to develop. A thumb injury cost him the majority of the 2010 season. He could add about 10 lbs more to his 190 lb frame that could make him a 15-plus home run player down the line. He has solid bat speed, which could hide a specific wrist hitch that he has at the plate. The hips and hands are not always in sync which causes timing issues and occasional slumps. The remedy to this is more at bats. The hitch is likely a reaction to the ball coming out of the pitcher's hand and not trusting the instincts. This can be fixed with more work in the cage and live experience. At this point is a platoon type player as he struggles against right-handed pitchers.

Health Record

Givens suffered a thumb injury that cost him the 2010 season.

Future

The Orioles will likely start Givens in Delmarva as that is where he finished last season. It is likely he will be moving to second base in the future. He will play better defensively.

If the organization is impatient they could convert him to a pitcher. His fastball sits in the 93-95 mph range.

The jury is out on whether Givens will be able to hit at the higher levels. If he struggles look for them to make a similar move with him as they did to backup catcher Luis Bernardo and convert him to a pitcher.
