Orioles Prospect Profile #13: Joe Mahoney

Mahoney hopes to continue his success from 2011 in 2012.

Joe Mahoney

Position: 1B

Height: 6'6”

Weight: 240 lbs

Born: 2/1/1987

Bats: Left

Throws: Left

Background:

The Orioles sixth round selection in the 2007 draft, Mahoney is entering his fifth season with the organization.

He spent all but three games with Double-A Bowie in 2011. Mahoney batted .289 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI in 85 games with the Baysox last season.

Scouting Report:

Mahoney is big and tall and can be a perfect fit for the Orioles at first base moving forward. He has a lot of raw power that was displayed for the first time in 2010 and some in 2011.

Quad injuries prevented the 25-year-old from suiting up the entire season. He is athletic for a big man and knows how to run the base paths. Mahoney has the potential to hit 20 plus home runs per season.

Health Record:

Quad injuries forced the Albany, New York native to the disabled list and cost him half the 2011 season.

Future

If Mahoney can stay healthy this could finally be his breakthrough season. It is not out of the question Triple-A Norfolk could be his destination to begin the 2012 campaign. He has played 137 games at Bowie in 2010 and 2011, so the next step wouldn't be surprising.

Depending on his health and performance, Mahoney could see the big league club in late 2012. A September call up is likely, especially if projected starting first baseman Chris Davis struggles this season.
