Orioles Prospect Profile #9: L.J. Hoes

Can 2012 be as successful a season for Hoes as 2011.

L.J. Hoes

Position: LF/2B

Height: 6'1”

Weight: 185 lbs

Born: 3/5/1990

Bats: Right

Throws: Right

Background

The Orioles third round selection in the 2008 Draft, Hoes was selected out of St. John's College High School in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In high school, Hoes was selected as an All-American in 2008

Hoes struggled to start the 2011 season, but came alive with a 5-5 game in Frederick, then shortly after was promoted to Double-A Bowie. He hit .305 with six homers in 95 games with Bowie.

Scouting Report:

Primarily at second base for the majority of his time at Frederick, Hoes was shifted out of that role and played the left field.

Defensively, he is more comfortable in the outfield and has made that known. Baltimore hasn't ruled out the possibility of second base in the future. He has an adequate arm and is able to cover his distance in left. A centerfielder in his amateur days, the Orioles should consider him in centerfield to see what he can do at the higher levels.

Hoes has good balance and quick hand speed at the plate and can drive the ball to any part of the field. He continues to develop into his 185 lb frame and could see a spike in power with the results. He is not a good of a hitter when he gets behind in the count early, so pitchers look to take advantage of him.

Health Record

Hoes is healthy heading into the 2012 season.

Future

If all goes right for the 21-year-old prospect, Hoes could see a good amount of time with Norfolk and even a cup of coffee at the big league level in 2012.
