O's Minor League Spring Training Notes- 3/19

The Orioles low Class A team defeated the Twins 7-1 on Monday.

o In a low Class A baseball game in Sarasota, the Orioles beat the Twins Monday 7-1.

o Austin Kinght started the scoring off with a wild pitch that allowed him to score from third in the first. Jerome Pena also scored in the first when Gabriel Lino hit a sacrifice fly to center.

o The 7th inning had an offensive barrage with 4 runs scored. Vincent Zazueta started off the scoring with a bases loaded walk. Chris Clinton and Gabriel Lino were driven in by a double to right by Samuel Starr in his first at-bat of the game. Gregory Lorenzo the drove in Hector Veloz with a single to right. On the same play Starr was tagged out trying to score in a play at the plate to end the inning.

o The last run of the game was scored in the same manner as the first, Austin Knight scoring from third on a wild pitch.

o Starter Trent Howard pitched 3 innings. He had 4 strikeouts but did give up 2 hits, 2 walks and a run. The run was scored on a single to center of a 2-1 fastball driving in the base runner on second.

o RHP Zachary Davies pitched 2 innings with 4 strikeouts. He gave up 2 hits on fastball to consecutive batters but no runs.

o RHP Jamie Esquivel pitched the 6th and 7th innings. He pitched strong giving up no hits and 3 strikeouts. The only batter to reach base was on a dropped third strike.

o RHP David Walters pitched a hitless 8th inning with the only batter to reach base was a dropped third strike.

o LHP Cameron Coffey pitched an inning with a full count walk.

o LHP Matthew Bywater pitched a perfect inning getting 3 swinging strikeouts without giving up a single ball.

o Samuel Starr made the most of his 2 at bats hitting a 2 RBI double, a run and a walk.

o Gabriel Lino had an RBI a hit and a run. However on defense, he had 2 dropped third strikes in which both batters reached base but he did throw out a runner in the 1st.

o Austin Kinght had a hit, a full count walk, and a 2 runs scored.

o Jerome Pena had a walk and a run in the first but went hitless the rest of the game.

o Vincent Zazueta, Chris Clinton and Hector Veloz each had a walk and a run in the 8th. Veloz also had a double in the 9th.

o Gregory Lorenzo had a two strike hit.

o Manuel Hernandez and Doug Bream each had full count walks.

o Manager Einar Diaz was pleased with the on base percentage. He was also happy with the pitching. He said, “We gave up one run in the first inning but after that it was really good. We kept the ball down and attacked the pitcher. It was important that the ball was down for all the pitchers.”
