Orioles Prospect Profile #7: Trent Mummey

The Orioles hope Mummey can build on his success from 2011.

Trent Mummey

Position: CF

Height: 5'10”

Weight: 185 lbs

Born: 1/5/1989

Bats: Left

Throws: Left

Background:

The Orioles fourth round pick in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft, Mummey is entering his second full season with the organization.

Mummey had a tough 2011 campaign as he suffered through some frustrating injuries, including a game last May where he went head first into a wall and was down for over 20 minutes before being taken in an ambulance to the local hospital. He missed 29 games with the concussion. He came back and several games later suffered hamstring injuries, which plagued him the rest of the season.

In 29 games, Mummey totaled three homers and 29 RBI with a .292 average.

Scouting Report:

Mummey is another outfield prospect that is slated to be a leadoff hitter at the big league level. He has above-average speed and has the ability to consistently get on base. He doesn't excel in anyone particular factor of a game, but he plays well in all aspects.

The former Auburn product is a plus defender and was one of the best defensive players in the 2010 draft class. He knows how to get a good jump off the bat and utilizes his speed as an advantage. Mummey's small in stature, which makes him underrated.

Future

If healthy, Mummey's future is bright at the next level. He is a consistent hitter that plays great defense and can swipe bases.

Frustrating injuries caused him to miss a ton of time last season, but with more experience, reps and consistent health, expect the 23-year-old to rise through the system and see Camden Yards in the next couple seasons at best.
