Orioles Minor League Camp- 3/23

ITO was on hand for the low Class A game between the Red Sox.

o In a low Class A baseball game in Sarasota, the Orioles lost to the Red sox Friday 3-0.

o Starting pitcher Nicholas Haughian pitched a strong 2 innings throwing a total of 26 pitches. He had 3 called strikeouts and only gave up one hit and a walk. he did a good job of extending the strike zone. He was especially strong in the second inning retiring the side without allowing a man on base.

o LHP Matthew Bywater had a rough start before settling in. the second batter he faced hit a pop fly to right only to have it drop for a single. He gave up a full count walk before the next batter hit a 3-run home run over the right field wall which were the only runs scored in the game. He then started the next inning giving up 2 straight hits including a first pitch stand up double to left. After that he retired the next three batters with the last two being called third strike. He pitched a total of 35 pitches in 2 innings of work

o RHP David Walters started off with an unusual play. The 1-2 fastball was popped to center only to have Kyle Hoppy miss a sliding catch. The runner however continued to second where he was met with a tag out. His next 3 batters got on base by a line drive to left and back to back full count walks before the next batter his into an inning ending double play to the shortstop. In his second inning, had a 1-2-3 inning off 5 pitches. He pitched total of 25 pitches

o The final three innings of the games were each throw by different pitches but were pitched excellently giving up a total of only one hit. RHPs Douglas Ferguson pitched the 7th, Timothy Adelman pitched the 8th and Luis Lebron pitched the 9th. Ferguson's 9 pitch 7th was assisted with an amazing diving catch by CF Michael Planeta. Ferguson also recorded a strikeout. Adelman gave up a hit giving up a grounder to center but also had strikeout on 10 pitches. Lebron had 2 strikeouts with a pop out in between.

o The Orioles had opportunities to score but couldn't capitalize

o Jeremy Nowak had two doubles in the game. His first came in the 6th when he hit a line drive to deep center off a 1-0 pitch. His second double was on a 2 strike ground ball to right field. He then advanced to third on a balk by the Red Sox pitcher.

o Jason Esposito hit a line drive to center for a triple.

o Pedro Perez reached second twice. In the third he hit a single to center and reached second after the next batter was walked. He also reached second in the 7th when he hit a line drive to right.

o Other than this, the orioles were cold at the plate with all other player getting a total of 2 hits and 4 walks.

o Both cathers had a rough day. Adam Davis allowed 2 stolen bases both in the third inning. The first was off a late throw to second and the second was off a dropped pitch. Pedro Perez didn't have a much better day while he did throw out a a running stealing second in the 5th inning, he was late on an earlier throw in the 4th inning and had a passed ball in the 5th which allowed the runners to advance.

o Manager Ryan Minor had some perspective when discussing the game. He said, “ You have to take everything you can and turn them into positives.”
