Kevin Gausman, RHP--Selected 4th overall (1st round)
1)Tell us what is going through your mind after being selected by the Orioles
Obviously really excited. It was a fun day for me and my family. I was kind of expecting to get a call before I got picked, but that didn't really happen so I was a little shocked to hear my name called.
2)Were you surprised it was the Orioles that selected you? Had you and the Orioles talked much before the draft?
Yeah I had talked to them a little bit and I knew I was in the range of four or five guys. I guess the Orioles just felt I fit the description of what they wanted.
3)Do you have any idea what the Orioles organization or farm system is like?
No I really don't. Growing up in Colorado and now living in Louisiana I don't really hear much about the Orioles. I plan on starting to look into the organization though and figuring out where all the teams are located and everything.
4)What type of pitches do you throw and at what speeds? Give us a scouting report please- what are your strengths and what do you need to work on the most?
I have a 4-seam fastball that ranges anywhere from 94 and 98 MPH, and a 1-seam fastball from 93-97. My 1-seam is more of a sinker. I also have a split-change up (84-86 MPH), which is probably my best secondary pitch, a curveball (77-80 MPH) and a slider (85-86 MPH).
5)Did you have a favorite team growing up or a favorite player?
Growing up in Denver I was obviously a Rockies fan and I always liked Andres Galarraga during his Rockie days. But I really enjoyed watching Randy Johnson and really wanted to be like him. Also my brother, I looked up to him. He played two years in the Orioles organization and I always looked at him as my hero.
6)Who would you compare your stuff to at the Major League level so Orioles' fans can get an idea of what you're like on the mound? and why?
Probably Max Scherzer of the Tigers. We have the same kind of stuff and are both power pitchers. If I develop my slider a little more I think it will be the same type of stuff as Max's.
7)What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?
When I was 9 years old and playing with some of my best friends we won the Colorado State championship. We had a lot of fun with it and I've been able to stay in touch with most of the guys over the years. Colorado isn't really known for baseball so it was a big deal to the state as well.
8)Are you looking to sign quickly and get your professional career started right away?
I don't really know, we'll see. I think it kind of depends on how much the O's are interested in me. Right now I'm focused on winning a National Championship for LSU. I'm confident we'll be able to get a deal done once my season is over.
9)What do you think you will bring to the Orioles organization?
Once I've completely matured and grown into my body I feel I can be a workhorse starter for the organization. I can go deep into games and throw strikes, but really I just feel I can contribute and do whatever the organization needs me to do.
