Q&A with Orioles 5th Rd Pick Colin Poche

We sat down with Orioles 5th round pick, Marcus HS (TX) LHP Colin Poche for a draft day Q&A.

Colin Poche, LHP--Selected 162nd overall (5th round)

1)Tell us what is going through your mind after being selected by the Orioles

I was really just excited. I've been waiting for this day (to get drafted) ever since we lost in the playoffs, so there was a lot of excitement in my house. We followed the draft on MLB.com and I got a call shortly after the Orioles selected me.

2)Were you surprised it was the Orioles that selected you? Had you and the Orioles talked much before the draft?

Yeah, I talked to the area scout Ken Guthrie and he had told me going in that they were very interested in me. But you never know what teams are going to do once the draft actually starts.

3)Do you have any idea what the Orioles organization or farm system is like?

I had an idea. Ken came over to my house and told me a little about the organization. From what I heard they do a very good job.

4)What type of pitches do you throw and at what speeds? Give us a scouting report please- what are your strengths and what do you need to work on the most?

I throw a fastball, change-up and slider. My fastball has been clocked from anywhere between 87 MPH and 92-93 MPH. I'm not real sure about my change-up or slider, but one of my strengths is just being able to throw strikes without a whole lot of extra help. One thing I need to work on is just getting physically stronger.

5)Did you have a favorite team growing up or a favorite player?

Well I'm from Texas so I've always been an Astros and Rangers fan. If there's one player I've admired growing up it would probably be Cliff Lee.

6)Who would you compare your stuff to at the Major League level so Orioles' fans can get an idea of what you're like on the mound? and why?

If I were to compare myself to anyone I would probably say Andy Pettitte, because I am able to throw a lot of strikes using my fastball.

7)What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?

I had a lot of fun playing in high school with guys that I've known since kindergarten, but I would probably say today, getting drafted, is my best moment in baseball. I've been preparing for this day ever since I started playing baseball and it's been my ultimate goal.

8)Are you looking to sign quickly and get your professional career started right away?

Yes I am definitely trying to sign right away and get my career started.

9)What do you think you will bring to the Orioles organization?

I will work hard and try to improve each day so that one day I can play up in Baltimore at the major league level.
