I still don't like these lineups that Black is putting out...I think having Quentin, Headley, Gyorko, and Alonso together in the order is good, but I don't like the order. I might be tempted to put Gyorko in the two spot, Alonso 3rd, Quentin 4th, and put Headley 5th, I think. Having Alonso hit 2nd would be intriguing too..
With Quentin 3rd, it at least gets him a guaranteed at-bat in the first inning though...
Jedd Gyorko went 0-for-3 on Friday and is 4-for-38 with one RBI since coming off the disabled list. Worse, it's 4-for-38 with no extra-base hits, no walks and a caught stealing in his only attempt. If this goes on for much longer, the Padres may want to send him down for a few weeks and go to Logan Forsythe at second base.
He's looked pretty awful since being back here. I doubt they send him down, but 4-38 is awfully hard to deal with out of the 5 spot
Why should they be better? They don't have a #1 or #2 starter. Starting the season with Volquez as your #1??? Marquis as your #2?? Expect rookies that never threw many innings in one season in the minors to pick up the workload? Tax your bullpen until their arms are dead?
I would have liked to seen Kevin Towers stayed on and had management insist that he didn't have say so over drafting and player development. He could build pitching staffs out spare parts and pull off some lopsided trades.
