Minor League Recap, April 9th

While the Padres might have dropped 2, the minor league system had another solid day going 2-2. Today featured another strong start from a Tin Cap pitcher, more reasons why Rincon should never be at 3B again, and 7 different lead changes in San Antonio.

AAA Padres defeat Colorado Springs 9-7

Josh Geer just will not go away. As much as some of us wonder why he is still with the Padres, he still continually pitches well enough to give the team a chance to win. On a day when wind gusts were up to 35 mph out to right, Geer managed to give up only 2 ER in 5 IP. He allowed 8 hits, 1 BB, 4 K.

The Padres were able to jump out to a quick 9-0 lead after 4 thanks in part to Anthony Rizzo's first HR as a Padre. On the day Rizzo went 2-5, HR (1), 2 RS, and 2 RBI. Andy Parrino (3-4, 2 2B, 2 RS), Logan Forsythe (2-4, 2B, 2 RS, RBI), and Aaron Cunningham (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) all had multi hit games for the Padres. Evereth went 0-5, but did steal his 4th base in 3 game. He is now 4-17 this year with 4 RS and 4 SB in 3 G

After Geer gave up 2 ER in the 5th it was the bullpens job to keep it a blow out. Aaron Poreda and Luis Perdomo were definitely not up to the challenge, as they let a 9-2 game turn into a 9-7 nail biter. In the 9th Evan Scribner pitched a 1,2,3 inning, with 1 K, for his first save. Padres win 9-7

AA San Antonio falls to NW Arkansas in a walk off 5-6

It was a back and forth game in San Antonio that sadly ended with back. Down by 1 in the 9th Jaff Decker led off with a 2B, and would later score on a Kyle Phillips RBI single. Sadly the Missions couldnt push another run across. With the score tied in the bottom of the 9th, Josh Spence gave up a walk off HR to the first batter he faced to end the game. 5-6 final.

Base runners were never the problem for the Missions as they pounded out 13 hits and 4 walks. However going 6-18 with RISP and leaving 11 runners on certainly hurt. The Missions also managed to ground into a staggering 4 DP. The top 5 batters in the lineup (Blake Tekotte, Dan Robertson, Jaff Decker, James Darnell, and Kyle Phillips) each were on base multople times and scored a run.

On the mound Jorge Reyes had a strong AA debut going 5 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. The 2 relievers were not as solid. Nick Vincent gave up 2 runs in 2 innings, while Josh Spense gave up the walk off blast.

High A Lake Elsinore was crushed by San Jose 10-3

The Padres have been attempting to show confidence in Edinson Rincon's defensive ability by allowing him to split time at 3rd with Jed Gyorko. Hopefully the Storm wont make this mistake again. 4, count them, 4 errors by Rincon led to 6 unearned runs. Needless to say the Storm lost this game falling to San Jose 3-10

Pedro Hernandez came on in relief of Chris Fetter and pitched a solid 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.

Jason Hagerty blasted his first HR of the year and had his 2nd multi hit game of the year. He went 2-3, HR(1), 2 RS, RBI. Jeudy Valdez had a 3 hit night going 3-5, SB (1), and a RS. Jonathon Galvez went 3-3, 2B, BB.

A Ball Fort Wayne shut out South Bend 5-0

I think South Bend is getting really tired of seeing the Tin Cap starters. 3rd day of the regular season and 3rd straight dominating start by a Tin Cap. This time Matt Branham towed the rubber. In 5 innings he allowed just 5 hits, no runs, 1 walk, and 6 K.

Donavan Tate went 1-3, RS, BB, SB (2). He was however picked off for the 2nd time in 3 games. Jake Blackwood hit his first HR of the year a 2 run shot in the first to put the Tin Caps ahead. Everett Williams had 2 hits a walk and 3 RS.
