Tuscon played a nice 4 hour and 39 minute game tonight. Wade LeBlanc got the start for Tuscon and pitched 7 solid innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits no walks and 5 K. Leblanc did surrender a 2 out, 2 run double in the bottom of the 7th to turn a 2 run lead into a tie game. Padres would take the lead only to see Greg Burke give it right back. After 6 innings of great pitching by Evan Scribner (2 IP, 2 K), Sam Deduno (2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K), and Aaron Poreda (2 IP, 1 H, 0 WALKS), the Padres turned the ball to reserve OF Bobby Kielty. After a leadoff walk, Kielty yielded a 2 out bloop single for the walk off hit. Bees beat the Padres 4-5 in 15.
Offensively, Luis Durango was the star of the show. Durango who had 5 2B and 2 3B all of last season, hit 2 triples in todays game. On the day he was 3-4, 2 3B, 2 RS, RBI, BB, bunt. Evereth Cabrera also had a multi hit game going 2-6, 2 RBI, BB, and an error. Forsythe had a tough day going 1-7, 2B, 2 K and his 4th error. Rizzo had the day off.
Missions rock Tulsa 6-0
Anthony Bass dominated right from the gate. On the night Bass went 5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. After a 2 out single in the 1st, Bass did not allow another hit until the 5th. No batter reached 2nd base until Bass left with 2 outs in the 6th. Great start for the Missions ace (and a great example for Casey Kelly who will start the home opener of Thursday). Alexis Lara and Colt Hynes each struck out 2 in a scoreless inning of relief.
As reported yesterday, Jaff Decker was a double shy of the cycle. To make ammends Decker doubles in 2 of his first 3 AB. On the day the future Padre went 3-4, 2 2B, HR (2), 2 RBI, BB. As the first road trip comes to an end, and the new Missions get ready for their first taste of home cookin on Thursday Decker is sporting a .375/.516/.833 line, 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 6 RS, 8 RBI, 7 BB, 5 K, 2 SB.... and that is why he is arguably the Padres best prospect.
No luck, or offense, for Lollis and the Storm as they get served 2-5
Lollis was not as dominating in his second start. He yielded a 2 run HR in the 1st then seemed to settle down. However in the 6th he gave up a walk, single double, before exiting the game. On the day Lollis went 5.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.
Reymond Fuentes went 1-4, RS, SB (2). He has now hit safely in every game this year, but has collected only 1 multi hit game thus far. Jason Hagerty continued to play well going 2-4, In his last 4 games Hagerty 8 H, 2B, 3B, HR4 RS, and 5 RBI.
Tin Caps split twin bill 4-0, 0-1, bigger question is the health of Tate and Williams
Scary moment for the Tin Caps in game 2 of the double header. In the 4th inning of a scoreless game a ball was hit into the gap in left center. Both Everett Williams and Donavan Tate dived for he ball and *smack* right into eachother. Both players laid on the ground for 5 minutes. The ball originally was in Tate's gloved but trickled out during the collision. The ump ruled no catch and an inside the park HR, which was the only run of the game. From what I am hearing Everett was shaken ump but was able to leave somewhat under his own power (being helped), Tate on the other hand had to be carted off the field. No reports yet as to the significance of either injury, but my guess would be that both suffered a concussion and we wont see either for around a week.
To further rub in the absence of two of the Padres top young OF, with 1 out in the final inning Bisson and Guinn pulled off a successful double steal putting runners on 2nd and 3rd for what would have been Tate's spot in the order. Dore, in Tates spot, struck out, then Cunningham, in WIlliams spot, struck out to end the game. Tin Caps lost 0-1 in game 2 Another shame was Mark Hardy pitched a complete game (6 IP) allowed only 2 H, 1 ER (the inside the park HR that should have been an out), 2 BB, 5 K.
Game 1 Fort Wayne won 4-0 behind a still healthy Everett Williams and Jake Blackwood. Williams went 2-4, 2 RS, SB (2) (Game 2 Williams was 1-1, BB, SB (3), before the crash. ). Blackwood had the big hit going 2-3, 2B, HR (2), 4 RBI, BB in a 4-0 Tin Caps win
Andrew Werner making his first start in a Padre system pitched 6 excellent innings allowing only 1 hit and 2 BB with 6 K. In the 2 games combined South Bend managed only 4 H and 1 run in the 2 games, BUT managed to split the twin bill. More reports on Tate and WIlliams will be sent out as they are learned
