Minor League Recap April 20th

Fort Wayne didnt respond well to the cold, Elsinore had problems with the xbh, and Portland was led by Anthony Rizzo.

AAA Tuscon beat Fresno 6-5

Castro struggled with location and consistency once again, but the Rizzo led offense guided the Padres to a 6-4 win

Simon Castro went 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, he also threw 2 WP. In 5 innings he threw 95 pitches and had a horrendous 51-44 S/B ratio. He did manage to lower his ERA from 9.89 to 8.40 and collected his first win of the year. Aaron Poreda continued his strong showing, pitching a 1,2,3 inning with 2 strikeouts. He also collected his first hold of the year. Scribner pitched a scoreless 9th for his 3rd save.

The game was a lot closer than it should have been as the Padres went 3-14 with RISP and left 11 on base. Luckily the Padres have Anthony Rizzo. Continuing to make a case for both PCL hitter of the week and BA hot sheet (which comes out Friday), Rizzo went 3-4, belting his 4th HR, 2 RS, 2 RBI, and a BB. In the last 7 games Rizzo has gone 15-27, 4 BB, 3 K, 4 2B, 3 HR, 7 RS, 10 RBI, 2 SB .556/.613/1.037/1.650 If that is not deserving (along with Darnell, Decker and a few other Padres) then I dont know what is. Evereth Cabrera is continuing to play well with the bat going 2-4, BB, CS (3). Rizzo (3) and ECab (4) both committed errors for the Padres.

AA San Antonio had an off day as they prepare to face Midland starting tomorrow High A Lake Elsinore lost 3-5

Similar to Castro, Watt struggled with location. However unlike Castro, Watt did not have a strong defense or Anthony Rizzo to pick him up. Storm fell 3-5

Watt threw 3 great innings allowing only a scratch single and a walk (in different innings). However in the 4th the defense let him down. After a leadoff single, Watt rolled a DP only to see the 2B (Anna) drop the ball worrying about the runner (everyone safe). After getting 2 more outs, Watt gave up another single only to see the LF (Payne) misplay the ball allowing all runners to move up. Next guy singled and more runs scored. BOO. It got even worse in the 5th, but Hayden Beard was able to come into a bases loaded 1 out situation and not give up a run. Beard threw 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K

Once again the offense is sorely missing power! (and patience). The team had runners on in most innings but could never get that one clutch HR or 2B that could change the game. Freiman had the lone xbh going 1-4, 2B, RS. Rincon, Liriano, and Gyorko had an RBI each. Hagerty has gone .222/.282/.278 over the last 9 games with 13 K. OUCH

Tin Caps lost both games in a double header 2-5, 1-5

Game 1:
Keyvius Sampson was not himself, giving up his first ER of the year on the first out of the game. He settled down afterwards and got through 5 but didnt seem like himself on the mound. He was allowed to go out for the 6th only 2 walk the first 2 batters of the inning. Carvajal would replace him and immediately give up a single and a GS. The 2-1 lead turned into a 2-5 loss

While the weather was reported as 39 degrees, the announcers were complaining most of the game that it felt like it was 10 degrees. Maybe the harsh weather affected Sampson, maybe it was just not his best start. Either way he went 5+ IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. The Tin Caps managed only 4 hits, but one of them was a 2 out 2 RBI single by Olabasi to give Fort Wayne a brief lead at 2-1.

Game 2:
For whatever reason Hardy was given the start as Cates was pushed back till tomorrow. Hardy wasnt bad, Franklin was...the Tin Caps again could only get 4 hits, and they lost 1-5. Blackwood continued to rake going 2-3, 2B, RS
