Minor League Recap May 8th

A game ends with a runner thrown out at home plate, Missions remain the best team in the Cal League, and a lot of short outings for pitchers. Happy Mother's Day.

AAA Tucson

Fast forward to the 9th inning. The T-Pads are down by 2, with the heart of the order coming up. A leadoff walk by Hunter gets the inning started with big Rizzo up. Well for once Rizzo did not come through popping up. Guzman did though, smacking a double to deep left center, putting the tieing run on 2nd. After a Clark pop-up, Quiroz singles on a line drive to CF. Hunter scores, but a strong throw from Andres Torres nails Guzman at the plate to end the game. 3-4 loss for the T-Pads

Inman had one of his shortest outings of the year, lasting only 4 innings. Unlike the rest of the pitchers that started for the Padres' farm system today, I actually know why Inman was removed. 98 pitches in 4 innings! Ouch. His line was 4 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K. Poreda pitched a strong 2 innings allowing 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K. Poreda's last 10 outings have gone…2 G, 0 BB…2 G, 5 BB…2 G, 0 BB…2 G, 4 BB…2 G, 0 BB. On the season in 19 IP, 12 BB, 19 K, 3.43 ERA.

Hunter reached base 3 times going 1-2, 2 BB, RS. While Quiroz was the only Padres to have a multi hit game going 2-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, RS. Of course a 3rd RBI would have tied the game and at least gotten to the bottom of the 9th. Rizzo went hitless going 0-2, Sac fly, RBI, BB. After getting back up to .500 at 14-14 the T-Pads have dropped 3 in a row and now at 14-17

AA San Antonio

Breit and 5 relievers combined to allow only 1 ER, and the offense behind Belnome, Carroll, and Breit smashed Corpus Christi 9-1

Breit only pitched 2 innings. They were 2 perfect innings as Breit didn't allow a baserunner and struck out 1. He was removed for Kunz who once again allowed a run in 2 innings. Vincent (2), Spence, Hynes, and Brach all tossed zeroes.

Jaff Decker hit his 10th HR to get the Missions on the board in the 1st, on the day he went 1-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K. He now boasts a 25 BB to 33 K which is pretty good but he is also averaging a K every 3.3 AB which is concerning. Back to the game. Belnome was perfection going 3-3, 2 RS, and a BB. Carroll also had 3 hits, 2 of them doubles, 2 RS, RBI. Weems had 2 hits including a 2B, RS, RBI. Breits one and only AB of the game he smacked a 2 RBI double. Blanks was given the day off, as there is not a DH with the Missions playing the Astros' AA affiliate.

High A Lake Elsinore

Lollis and the bullpen were excellent (finally), the defense didn't commit an error (amazingly), and the 2 big Dominican prospects both homered (yay). Storm finally win shutting out Stockton 4-0

Lollis, pitched 5 innings, which, ended up being more than anyone else down on the farm today. Lollis allowed 4 hits, walked 3, but did strike out 5. He improved to 2-4 on the season and dropped his ERA below 5. Fetter appeared out of the bullpen for the 1st time all season which is weird since he started Thursday, but with the pen being overworked, and an off day on Monday they probably used it to their advantage. Fetter only pitched 1 inning, 1 H, 1 K, earning his first hold of the year. Pease pitched the final 2 innings without allowing a hit, walking 1, striking out 2

For once the Storm not only got hits, but got xbh. Gyorko doubled (1-4, RS), Rincon doubled and homered (2) (2-4, RS, RBI), Freiman doubled 2x (3-4, RS, RBI), Galvez homered (4) (2-4, RS, 2 RBI), and Olabasi tripled (1-3). The Storm only had 2 BB but also only struck out 3x which is a new season low. Fuentes went 1-4 on the day and has kept his ave over .300 for nearly the entire year. Fuentes BB:K ratio is still really high but at least he has only struck out 3x in his last 22 AB. Storm improve to 11-20 on the year

Low A Fort Wayne

It's hard to win without much of an offense. The Tin Caps #3-7 went 0-17 with 6 K, the team as a whole only managed 6 baserunners, 2 of which were erased on a double play, and the Tin Caps fell again 2-6

For reasons unknown to this writer, Branham was taken out after 2 innings. They were not the most effective innings as he allowed 3 R, 2 ER, on 5 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2. Sanchez then pitched 4 shutout innings before Marona gave up 3 ER thanks to walking 4 in 0.2 IP. Branham fell to 2-3 with the loss

Dore went 2-3, RS and Tremblay went 1-3, RBI, BB. That's about it. Tin Caps only had 3 chances with a RISP, only left 2 on base, and just couldn't get any offense what so ever. By losing the series the Tin Caps fall to 12-19 which puts them in last place in the Eastern Division of the MWL.
