Minor League Recap May 21st

Every team that played at least 9 innings won. Lake Elsinore is now on a 6 game winning streak.

AAA Tucson

Cedric Hunter pinch hit and grounded out with 2 runners on to end the 6th inning. Who would have guessed that that would be the end of the game, as the T-Pads lose 4-3 in 5.5 innings.

Matt Buschmann made his 2nd start of the year for Tucson. The weather was bad all day so it is tough to evaluate a pitchers performance. Buschmann went 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. In just 4 innings Buschmann through a staggering 92 pitches (54 strikes). Poreda pitched the 5th allowing an unearned run while striking out two.

Jesus Guzman continues to swing the bat well. Tonight he went 2-3, HR (4), 2 RBI. Guzman is riding a mini 6 game hit streak and has safely in 15 of his last 16 games. Guzman ranks 2nd on the club in nearly every offensive category. Of course he would be of more note if a certain Italian 1B wasn't tearing up the PCL. Guzman is also the only reason that Darnell is still in AA and Gyorko in Elsinore.

AA San Antonio

One of the best offenses in the minors met one of the best pitchers in the minors. Perez won the battle. But like most army generals its not about the battle but the war. Perez went 6 innings only allowing an unearned run, but down 5-1 in the bottom of the 8th the Missions came back behind the heart of the order. Fast forward to the 11th inning and with the bases loaded and 2 outs Kyle Blanks reminded everyone that he was the most dominating player in the 2008 Texas League, by hitting a walk off grand slam deep to right field. Missions win 9-5

Juan Oramas made his 2011 debut. He tossed 2.2 scoreless before starting to allow a few hits and runs. Overall he went 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K. Last year Oramas, who tossed a no hitter, had 115 K in only 99 IP compared to only 29 BB. While 3 BB and only 2 K in 3.1 IP isn't great, it is nice to see him back on the mound. Italiano got the win striking out 2 in 1 inning.

Jaff Decker was the offensive star in terms of sheer number of times reaching base safely. Decker went 1-2, 4 BB, 2 RS. That is reaching base safely in 5 of 6 plate appearances. Decker is still hitting only .171 over his last 10 games with only 1 extra base hit, but reaching base 5 times is always a positives especially for someone in a slump. Blanks went 2-6, 2B, GS, 5 RBI.

High A Lake Elsinore

Denis will be writing the game recap for this but they won

Low A Fort Wayne

A back and forth game in Fort Wayne. While Branham didn't pitch extremely well it is always nice to see the offense amount to something. Especially the middle infielders. Who combined for 4 hits, 2 BB and 4 RS. Tin Caps take advantage of 5 Western Michigan errors to win 9-7

Matt Branham, the 2010 Eugene Emeralds pitcher of the year, went 6+ innings allowing 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. The biggest problem for Branham came with the extra base hits. Of the 6 hits he allowed 4 went for extra base hits (2 2B, 3B, HR). Of course it doesn't help when the defense commits While his 2-3 record does not look stellar his pitching, like most of Fort Wayne, has been incredible. Branham increased his already stellar K/BB ratio to nearly 5:1. Branham has allowed 3 ER or fewer in 6 of his 8 starts this year.

B.J. Guinn has been one of the many hitters that the Tin Caps had hoped would step. At least today, he did. Guinn went 3-5, coming a HR shy of the cycle scoring 2 runs. He raised his May BA to .225, which while bad is still 40 points higher than his April. Most switch hitters when struggling will try to at least focus on getting the timing down from one side of the plate, which is usually left handed since they see predominantly RHP. However, Guinn has a .527 OPS left handed and a .537 RHP. Either way not too hot. But at least the great night helps and will hopefully put him on a hot streak.
