Minor League Recap May 23rd

Stay hot Lake Elsinore! Big Country pitches well and Storm win in a blow out. A pitchers duel in both AAA and Fort Wayne, and 2 extra innings games played.

AAA Tucson

Hefner finally has a good start, but as luck would have it the T-Pads cant score. Padres fall 1-2

Jeremy Hefner went 6 innings allowing only 3 hits, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. It was the first time since April 26th that he has allowed fewer than 3 runs, and the first time all year he has had a 1 or lower WHIP. The biggest issue this year was BAA as hitters were hitting .319 off Hefner coming into the game. He managed to lower it to .302, but of course was still given his 4th loss of the year.

Not a good day for anyone in a Padres uniform. Both Cintron and Cunningham had a multihit game, but no Padre had an extra base hit. Rizzo went 0-4, with 2 K. Cunningham has hit .350 in his last 10 games.

AA San Antonio

Missions once again got schooled by the Frisco starter, but once again came back late. This time with a 4 run bottom of the 9th Sadly as the game went to extras Frisco scored 2x in the 10th of Brach and won 6-4, snapping the Missions win streak and salvaging the last game of the 4 game series.

Josh Spence went 2 iP, 1 H, 2 K. The 2010 draftee has dominated in May. Hitters are hitting a whopping .164 against him. When runners are in on base, Spence drops even lower allowing only 3 hits vs 36 outs.

Vince Belnome collected the biggest hit of the game. A 2 out, 2 RBI double, down by 2 in the 9th inning. On the day he went 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI. Belnome is hitting .289/.400/.451 on the year. In any other league he is being heralded as one of the best players on a team. But on a Missions team that features Darnell, Decker (x2), Blanks, Tekotte, Robertson, Weems, etc… Belnome often gets overshadowed.

High A Lake Elsinore

When you are hot, you're hot. Everyone on the Storm with a hit, every player with at least a RS. In fact 6 of the Storm had a multi RS game. Storm win 16-4

After 2 straight hitless games, Gyorko had to do something big to even out his BA. How about 4-5, 2 2B, 2 RS, 2 RBI. The doubles give him 22 on the year, 45 RBI, and 42 RS. The 22 year old is just a hitter. Plain and simple, he is a hitter.

Galvez was one of the few players with "only" 1 hit, although he did walk twice. More importantly he stole 2 bases (2nd and 3rd) giving him 11 on the season. The 11 SB to 1 CS is by far his best rate of his career, and give him a chance to steal 25 bases for the first time. His previous high was 18 SB last year (7 CS)

Low A Fort Wayne

Dore homers with 1 out in the 9th to tie the game at 2. In the 10th Blackwood hits a 2 out 2 RBI double to give the Tin Caps a 4-2 lead. They win 4-2 in 10

Werner continues to pitch well going 6 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. It was the 7th time in 8 starts the 24 year old has given up 3 ER or less in a start. It was also the 3rd start Werner has not walked a batter. He is averaging exactly 2 BB/9

Rymer Liriano had a great day going 2-4, 2B, 3B, RS, RBI, BB, 2 SB (12). The Domincan outfielder, probably has as much raw talent as anyone in the system, and on days like today you get a glimpse of just how special he can be. Liriano has been in the middle of a slump where he has hit .182/.234/.295 with 18 K in the last 12 games. Hopefully this game helps him break out.
