Minor League Recap July 6th

Darnell hits his 1st AAA HR, Brach gets his 1st AAA save, and the Ems streak is broken

AAA Tucson

Hefner and the pen dominate while Cunningham and Cabrera lead the offense. T-Pads win again as Brad Brach gets his 1st AAA save 6-3

Jeremy Hefner finally got his W/L record over .500 with the win tonight. Hefner pitched 6 strong innings allowing 3 R, 2 ER, on 4 hits, walking 4, and striking out 4. It was his 2nd start in a row allowing 4 walks. The Padres shifted previous closer, Evan Scribner to the 8th inning and gave Brach his 1st opportunity to save the game. Scribner pitched a 1,2,3 inning earning his 1st hold, while Brach gave up a walk but escaped unharmed.

Aaron Cunningham came within a triple of the cycle. Of course he actually had a chance for it, in the 7th but pulled up at 2nd with his 2nd 2B of the game. The T-Pad allstar went 4-4, 2 2B, HR (9), 2 RS, RBI. Cabrera had 2 hits (2B, 3B) along with an RBI and his 19th SB. Darnell also hit his 1st AAA HR going 1-4.

AA San Antonio

Missions had the day off today before starting a 6 game homestand starting tomorrow

High A Lake Elsinore

Score and score often. This was the motto for the Storm today. Good thing as the Storm give up 6 in the 9th but hold on for a 12-9 win

Jeudy Valdez has really turned it on over the past couple weeks. Valdez had another 2 hits including a 2B, 2 RS, RBI, SB (22). Valdez his 9-19 during this 4 game hitting streak. Even better Valdez has recorded a multi hit game in 6 of his last 10 games, which have included 3 2B, 3B, 2 HR, 9 RS, 8 RBI, 6 SB.

Jeremy McBryde continues to do well in relief for the Storm. The 24 year old went another 2 strong innings allowing only a hit. In his last 5 G, McBryde has gone 10.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K. McBryde has a 1.46 ERA since the ASB.

Low A Fort Wayne

Welcome to the worst bullpen in all of baseball. It almost seems more surprising when a reliever is able to throw a scoreless inning, compared to giving up multiple runs. Tin Caps blow a couple of 2 runs leads and fall 8-5

Whether it is to protect him or to save his innings, Adys Portillo gets one of the quickest hooks in all of baseball. To be fair Portillo has allowed 21 ER in the 4th and 5th combined this year (9.2 IP). Portillo went 3.2 IP, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, walking 4 while striking out 3. It was the 7th time in 14 starts this year that Portilo has failed to go 4 innings. There is no question that the stuff is there, but he works DEEP counts on nearly every hitter, and his biggest foe this year might be strike 1.

Colt Tyrell did his best job to keep the Tin Caps ahead. He had an RBI 3B that gave the Tin Caps their 1st lead of the game, then after the pen started giving it up hit a HR to put the Tin Caps back on top by 2. It was the 1st career triple from the Dayton alum.

Short Season Eugene

I guess on a day when the offense has a bad day, might as well have a bad day pitching as well. The streak comes to an end as the Ems get blown out 11-1

James Needy got his 2nd start of the year as he still recovers from the injuries that have kept him out for most of the past 2 years. Needy lasted 2.1 IP allowing 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. While it wasn't his greatest outing, just seeing him out on the mound is great.

Not much on offense as the Ems only scored 1 run. Spangenberg was named player of the week again, and went 1-2, 2 BB, SB (6). He did unfortunately commit his 6th error of the year which led to an unearned run.
