Minor League Recap July 13th

Spangenberg played his 1st game of the year for the Tin Caps, Ems mourn the loss of their leader, and the upper 2 clubs have the day off.

AAA Tucson

The T-Pads have the next 2 days off for the All Star break. When they return on Thursday they will be playing "home games" at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. Aaron Cunningham went 0-1, BB in the AAA all star game. Former Padres AAA member Mark Worrell got the save for the International League in their 3-0 win over the PCL

AA San Antonio

The Missions have an off day after a sweep

High A Lake Elsinore

A matinee for the Storm. Former 1st round pick Nick Schmidt was on the mound for his 2nd start with Lake Elsinore. For the 2n time in a row he was handed the loss as the Storm could not muster any late inning heroics today falling 2-4

From a number stand point Nick Schmidt did not pitch badly today. He went 4.1 IP, allowing 4 R (2 ER) on 3 hits walking 3 while striking out 7. The good news was that his 7 K's were his highest since a start with Fort Wayne on June 10th, 2009 where he struck out 9 (his current career high). Schmidt has already fallen off the Padres top 30 prospects so anything he can do to gain back some favor would be great.

Once again not much to report on offensively. Danny Payne hit his 6th HR of the year, and Galvez (26), Freiman (5), and Valdez (23) all had SB for the Storm. Fuentes is in a 1-17 slump and is hitting .194 in July with 0 SB

Low A Fort Wayne

Spangenberg made his Tin Caps debut, but it was Liriano who provided the offense. Tin Caps win thanks to some great pitching and Liriano's bat, 3-2.

Cory Spangenberg made his MWL debut tonight and for his credit he reached base safely in his first 2 plate appearances (walk and a HBP), making it 26 straight games he has reached base safely. He also stole his 1st MWL base. Sadly in his 3rd PA he came up with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs and swung at the first pitch (after a walk) grounding out weakly to 2nd. Spangenberg would go 0-2, BB, HBP, K.

After Spangenberg walked with 1 out in the 1st, Liriano came up and grounded into a force out. He then made up for it by stealing 2nd (44) and going to 3rd on a throwing error. He would then come into score on a single giving the Tin Caps an early 1-0 lead. He later came up as the leadoff batter the inning after Spangenberg ended the inning with a GO and crushed a ball for his 9th MWL HR. in his final AB (again leading off an inning) Liriano bit a ball deep into the gap that the CF tried to make a diving grab at and missed. Even though the ball just trickled off his glove Liriano displayed stellar speed as he was already at 3rd with his 4th 3B of the year. Of course with his luck he didn't score and the game stayed at 3-2. Liriano went 2-4, 3B, HR, RBI, 2 RS, SB. Not bad for the Dominican youngster

Short Season Eugene

No Spangenberg, no offense. Ems lose 4-0

John Barbato picked up his first loss of the year. He pitched 4 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, walking 1 and striking out 3. After striking out 16 in his first 3 starts, Barbato has only struck out 5 in his last 3 starts. Even with the 7 hits allowed, batters are still only hitting .232 off the young right hander.

5 hits no runs. Lee Orr had the only multi-hit game going 2-4, 2B, SB (6). Despite only hitting .232 on the year, Orr has a nice .393 OBP and .478 SLG. Orr leads the club in HR (4) and is 2nd on the club (to the departed Spangenberg) in walks with 14.

Rookie League Padres

After allowing 6 runs in the first inning, the AZL Pads allowed only 1 run over the next 8 innings. The offense came alive and the Pads win 10-7
