Minor League Recap July 21st

Portillo is outstanding and the Storm have an offensive explosion

AAA Tucson

The game was called last night after Leblanc pitched a scoreless 1st and the Padres loaded the bases with no outs. That was the last good thing that happened. Deduno came in and bad stuff started to happen. T-Pads fall 9-2.

Joe Thatcher made his 2nd rehab game in Tucson and this time tossed a scoreless inning allowing only a walk and a K. Thatcher, who has been on the DL all year, fell behind 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Luckily the 4th batter was Sean Kazmar and he swung at the 1st pitch and grounded out. Thatcher has 6 K in 3 rehab innings this year.

James Darnell was the lone brightspot for the T-Pads. Darnell was on base 4 times with a single, 2B, and 2 walks. Darnell has been on base 10x in the past 2 games.

AA San Antonio

Matt Buschmann made his 1st start in a few months for the Missions and the offense piled on 11 hits as they win 6-4

Jason Hagerty got his 1st big hit with the Missions, a 2 RBI double in the 2nd that gave the Missions a 2-0 lead. It was his 1st double of the year in San Antonio and doubled the amount of RBI he had with the Missions from 2 to 4. More importantly the double in the 2nd broke an 0-14 slump.

Jaff Decker came back from 2 days off and collected his first multi-hit game since the 4th of July. Between multi-hit games Decker had been in a 3-46 slump with 14 K. Decker went 2-4, 2 RS, SB (11). Both of Jaff's hits came with 2 strikes. It was the 1st time all year Jaff hit 5th in the lineup and it seemed to work.

High A Lake Elsinore

Welcome to Inland Empire well the ball flies. Well at least it flew for the Storm as they win 15-4

9 different members of the Storm had a hit, scored a run, and had an RBI. The Storm 4 2B, 3 3B, and 4 HR. Reymond Fuentes as Wandi Olabisi came within a 2B of the cycle. Fuentes led the way with 4 hits including a 3B and a HR (2), along with 2 RS, 2 RBI, and a BB. In fact Fuentes 9 TB equaled the number f bases Fuentes had in his last 14 G COMBINED. Nate Freiman went 3-6, with his 2nd 3B and 2 HR(16) to go with his 5 RBI.

It wasn't the greatest start for Andrew Werner who went 5 innings allowing 4 R (3 ER) on 6 H, 3 BB, and 6 K. It was only the 2nd time in 6 starts he allowed more than 1 run for the Storm, but considering the ball was flying out tonight he will gladly take the 3 ER allowed with a W next to his name in the box score.

Low A Fort Wayne

Lets all be optimistic that we are finally seeing the potential wrapped in the enigma that is Adys Portillo. Portillo and the pen shut down Cedar Rapids for their 6th straight win 3-0 the final.

It took 16 starts but Adys Portillo finally earned his 2nd win of the year. The 19 year old RHP went 5.2 IP allowing no runs on 3 hits, walking 2, while striking out 7. Accrording to the announcers Portillo topped out at 97 mph, while throwing a 79-82 mph change that had hitters off balance all night. It was the 2nd straight start that Portillo was able to make it past the 5th, but only his 3rd in 16 starts. Portillo has had a rough time in the 4th inning all year, allowing 33 baserunners and 16 ER to score while recording only 28 outs. This time however, Portillo worked a 1,2,3 4th. In 3 July starts this year Portillo is 1-1, 16 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 8 BB, 14 K.

The star on offense for the Tin Caps was a fellow 19 year old Dominican prospect in Luis Domormo. Domoromo went 2-3, 2B, 2 RS, SF, RBI. 2x Domoromo led off an inning with a base hit and both times he was able to come around to score, as the rest of the Tin Caps were able to execute small ball offense. Domoromo's 2 hits extended his hitting streak to 6 games. During the streak he is 9-27, 5 RS, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 0 BB, 3 K.

Short Season Eugene

After a 1 day hiatus the offensive draught comes back in full force. Ems commit 3 errors only score 1 run and fall 2-1.

The Ems gave the ball to Colin Rea who is a 12th round pick out of Indiana State. For the 3rd start in a row Rea did not allow an ER. In fact Rea did not allow a hit and yet was saddled with the loss. He went 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Rookie League Padres

Offense comes alive and makes up for the hammering of Uber Paz (definitely my favorite name on the Padres). AZL wins 11-10.
