Padres Farm Report August 22nd

The system goes 4-2 despite the fact that no pitcher had a QS.

AAA Tucson

Well at least the T-Pads made it interesting. After giving up a 4 run 4th the Pads come back with 3 in their half of the frame. After giving up3 more in the 7th and 2 in the 8th the Pads score 2 in the 8th, and get a 2 out 2 RBI 3B from Luis Martinez (whats with catchers and triples?) in the 9th. But with the tieing run finally at home plate, Hoffpauir (who went 3-5, 2 2B, 3 RS) flew out to LF to end the game. 11- 9 loss

Anthony Rizzo had a 2 RBI single in that 3 run 5th for the Padres It was his only hit of the game as he went 1-5, 3 K. The 2 RBI does give him over 100 (97 with T-Pads, 6 with SD Psds). I know I wrote about this last week but it just doesn't seem like the same Rizzo. Case in point Rizzo came up in that 5th inning with 2 on and 2 out and the pitcher challenged him with a belt high fastball and Rizzo swung right through it. Next pitch a bit higher, same result. With an 0-2 count a WP put runners on 2nd and 3rd and once again they challenged Rizzo, this time though Rizzo was able to make contact and line the 2 RBI single. Before the promotion the opposing team would have walked him intentionally. Just sayin. Rizzo is in a 3-23 slump and now has a .250/.338/.422 line in August

AA San Antonio

Erlin struggled in his brief 3 innings, but the offense was there to pick him up as the Missions win again this time 8-4

The damage could have been much worse for Erlin. In his 3 IP he allowed 2 ER, on 6 H, 2 BB, 2 K. After a relatively easy 1st, Erlin gave up a HR, BB, and 2 singles to start the 2nd. With the bases loaded and no out Erlin was able to get a fly ball to medium right which Carroll caught and made a strong home to the plate to hold the runners. He then forced an inning ending twin killing. In the 3rd, Arkansas had 2 on with 2 out, before Orlando Mercado hit the ball past a diving Gyorko in LF. The 1st runner scored but a very strong throw by Jaff Decker and a great relay by Parrino and then tag by Hagerty limited the damage and ended the inning. Jaff reached base 3 times, scored 2 and drove in 2. Gyorko hit his 23rd HR of the year and drove in runs # 101 and 102 in the win

High A Lake Elsinore

Its not how many hits you get, but rather what you do with those hits. Despite being outhit 11-6 the Storm hold on to 1st thanks to a solid pitching performance from De Paula and a big 3 – run bomb from Jeudy Valdez the Storm win 5-3.

Valdez hit his HR in the 5th inning to give the Storm a 5-0 lead. Unfortunately those were the last runs of the game as the last 7 in a row were retired. Valdez 3 RBI give him 84 on the season, and enable him to hold off Jaff Decker (81) for 4th place on the RBI list behind only Freiman (103), Gyorko (102) and Rizzo (102). His 13 HR is already a career high as is RS (83), RBI (84), 3B (6), H (135), and with his 33rd SB tonight he is 1 shy of matching his best. Not bad for a 22 year old middle infielder.

Low A Fort Wayne

Matt Jackson was off the DL to make a "start," Liriano steals 2 more bases, Spangenberg with a multi hit game, and Portillo ended up winning his 3rd game of the year. 6-1 Tin Caps were the victors

Over his last 2 starts entering into tonights contest Jackson had gone 11 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 12 K. Unfortunately those 2 starts came June 15th and 27th. Without pitching a few games in the AZL first, Jackson returned to Fort Wayne and was on a pitch count. He went a strong 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. The RHP who was named an all star right before he got hurt, now has 63 K compared to only 10 BB in 55 IP, with a sparkling 2.13 ERA.

Short Season Eugene

As a side note with Tate out for the rest of the year Martinez has been promoted to Eugene. Martinez hit .354/.394/.593 in 44 G for the AZL Pads. Ems are struggling on offense, not so much getting runners on but getting the big hit. 0-9 with RISP and the Ems fall 7-0

It was not a good game all around. Scott was hit hard early. Peterson went 1-5 but had 2 SB (31 in 61 G). Duanel Jones had a double and Martinez went 2-4 in his 1st start in Eugene. That's about it

Rookie League Padres

Needy didn't fare too well in his 2nd AZL start, of course it doesn't help when your own error leads to 3 unearned runs. BUT the offense bailed him out and AZL Pads win 7-6
