August Pitchers of the Month

Brad Brach leaves the Padres minor league system with a bang and Erlin delivers in San Antonio. Padres' may have another Independent League find in Lake Elsinore and Quakenbush is some to keep an eye on...and not just for the name.

Portland: RHP/RP Brad Brach 2.20 ERA

Brach had the lowest ERA of any member of the T-Padres staff pitching in the hitting funhouses of the PCL South. He struck out 18 in 16.1 innings pitched against only a single walk and 11 hits. With the exception of a sole bad outing in Oklahoma City, where he gave up two of his four earned runs, he was 7 for 8 in save opportunities.

Prospect Watch: RHP Jeremy Hefner was the workhorse of the Tucson staff throwing 37 innings in six starts with a 2-2 record and 4.38 ERA. Hefner struck out 33 against 16 walks. LHP Aaron Poreda showed some promise with a 20/12 K/BB ratio but for once caught a little too much of the plate with 19 hits in 14 innings for a 5.14 ERA. Starter Samuel Deduno had a 3.82 ERA but also gave up 19 walks in six starts and 35.1 innings against only 23 strikeouts.

Disappointments: RHP Will Inman had a 6.11 ERA giving up 21 hits in 17.2 innings since moving to the bullpen.

San Antonio: LHP/SP Robert Erlin 0-0 1.71 ERA Since coming over from the Texas Rangers in the Mike Adams trade Erlin had the bad luck to not win his first game until his sixth start but pitched very well in the interim. In five starts he gave up a total of four earned runs with 21 strikeouts in 21 innings against 4 walks.

Prospect Watch: The Missions' staff's team ERA of 2.53, holding the opposition to batting average of .229 was a big reason San Antonio went 20-9 in August. RHP Simon Castro was 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA with a 16/4 K/BB ratio. Closer Miles Mikolas was 6 for 6 in save opportunities with the opposition only hitting .212 against him. RHP Jon Wieland, the other pitcher in the Adams deal, won three of his five starts against one loss with a 2.77 ERA. He only gave up 23 hits in 26 innings with a 18/6 K/BB ratio. LHP Pedro Hernandez had a 34/6 K/BB ratio to go along with a 3.38 ERA for a 3-2 record. LHP Juan Ormas was 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA with a 34/9 K/BB ratio. Last but not least RHP Nick Vincent continues to do the job out of the pen only giving up 8 earned runs in 26 innings with a 18/6 K/BB ratio.

Disappointments: None.

Lake Elsinore LHP/SP Andrew Werner 2-0 2.25 ERA Andrew Werner just continues to produce. The Independent League signee finished the season as one of the Storm's best pitchers and in August he showed why with 19 strikeouts in 24 innings against only a single walk. In five starts he gave up six earned runs.

Prospect Watch: Former first round pick LHP Nick Schmidt put together some nice outings in August with a 29/11 K/BB ratio in 34 innings pitched for a 1-2 record and 3.18 ERA. LHP Mike Watt was 1-2 in four starts with a 3.00 ERA and an 18/6 K/BB ratio.

Disappointments: RHP Aaron Breit was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA despite posting a good 19/4 K/BB ratio. A nasty start in Bakersfield where he failed to record a single out while giving up 8 runs hurt him.

Fort Wayne: RHP/RP Kevin Quakenbush 1-1 1.26 ERA

After being promoted from Eugene in late July, Quakenbush, an eighth round draft pick out of South Florida in the 2011 draft, has been dominant. This month he struck out nearly two batters an inning with 25 strikeouts in 14.1 innings against only 4 walks and 7 hits as Midwest League batters only hit .140 against him.

Prospect Watch: RHP Keyvius Sampson continues to roll with a 3-1 record and 3.63 ERA. Sampson struck out 30 against only 11 walks and with the exception of one bad start, probably would have been the organization's pitcher of the month again. LHP RHP/relief pitcher Adam Dominick had 25 strikeouts against only two walks while only giving up 7 earned runs in 18.1 innings. The Padres two former catchers now pitchers Yefri Carvajal and Robert Lara both had good months. Carvajal had a 1.04 ERA in 17.1 innings with a 12/3 K/BB ratio and Lara was 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA striking out 17 against only 7 walks in fifteen innings.

Disappointments: RHP Adys Portillo continued his tough year with a 9.39 ERA after being moved to the bullpen.

Eugene: RHP/SP Cody Hebner 1-0 2.25 ERA

Hebner was a fourth round pick out of Green River CC in this year's draft and this month in Eugene only gave up six earned runs in six starts. He struck out 24 batters in 24 innings against only 10 walks as the opposition hit only .171 against him. Hebner was described by many draft pundits as a type of mini version of Tim Lincecum because of his high leg kick and slight build.

Prospect Watch: RHP/Closer Matt Stites posted a 3-0 record with 3 saves in three opportunities. Stites had a 23/3 K/BB ratio in 18 innings pitched as the opposition could only manage a .115 batting average against him. RHP William Scott, a 2010 draft pick, was 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA four starts and one appearance with a 19/5 K/BB ratio in twenty-four innings.

Disappointments: RHP James Needy, a top pick in the 2009 draft, struggled in Eugene with a 8.59 ERA in three starts before being sent down to the AZL.

AZL RHP/RP Daniel Cropper 1-0 1.93 ERA

Cropper was signed by the Padres as a free agent this year out of UNC-Wilmington where he left school as one of the leaders in all of the Seahawks' career pitching categories. In six appearances he had 9 strikeouts in 9.1 innings without allowing a walk giving up only two earned runs before being promoted to Eugene.

Prospect Watch: James Needy rebounded in the desert after being sent down from Eugene with a 2-0 record in two starts to go along with a 2.70 ERA. The big right-hander struck out 7 against two walks in 10 innings pitched. LHP Robert Eisenbach had a 1-0 record with a 12/3 K/BB ratio in 15 innings. RHP James Jones was 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 10 innings giving up only a single run in nine appearances.

Disappointments: RHP Josh Worrell had a 1-0 record and that is where the good news ends. In 10.1 innings he had a 15.68 ERA as the opposition hit .463, yes, .463 against him.
