Madfriars' Farm Report: July 18

Eric Stults had a strong showing in his four-inning rehab appearance to pace Tucson. Matt Jackson stepped in for the Missions nicely after Donn Roach joined the rest of the rotation on the DL. Chris Fetter continues to climb back from surgery while a pair of lefties deal in Eugene. Max Fried took his first professional loss.

Fresno 8 Tucson 5

Key Stats: 1B Clark 1-3, HR (16), BB; SS Weems 1-4, 2B, 3RBI; LHP Stults 4IP, 1ER, 7K, 2BB

Eric Stults' second rehab start went much better as the lefty struck out seven over four innings and gave up just one run. Coming back from a strained lat, which was recently renamed Padreitis by the AMA, the waiver claim starter yielded a walk and double with one out in the first, but then settled in and struck out a pair in each of his next three innings. In all, Stults threw 74 pitches, 46 for strikes.

Four different relievers, three of whom have seen time in the Majors this season, combined for five scoreless innings of relief. The staff struck out 14 hitters total, setting a season high in the process. Brad Boxberger picked up the win with two innings of work and three strikeouts.

Beamer Weems' two-out, bases-clearing double in the first provided all the offense the club would need. Matt Clark tacked on an additional run with a homer in the third and Sawyer Carroll tripled and scored on an Andy Parrino sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Frisco 4 San Antonio 3

Key Stats: 2B Galvez 3-5, R; 1B Freiman 1-4, 2B, 2RBI; RHP Jackson 5IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 4K, 1BB

Matt Jackson worked five solid innings in his first Double-A appearance filling in for newly-disabled Donn Roach, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead and the offense once again couldn't come up with a big hit.

Jackson struck out the side in the first inning and, despite putting two runners on in two of the next three innings, carried a shutout into the fifth. The right-handed power duo of Nate Freiman and Cody Decker hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the fifth to put the Missions on the board, but a leadoff error by Jeudy Valdez set up a two-run Frisco inning. The bullpen gave up single runs in the seventh and eighth to lose the game.

Second baseman Jonathan Galvez went 3-for-5 and was the only Missions hitter not to strike out. After a torrid start to the year, his production has dropped off to a .660 OPS with just one extra-base hit this month.

Roach's injury was not announced.

Rancho Cucamonga 5 Storm 3

Key Stats: 3B McElroy 3-4, 2RBI; RHP Andriese 5IP, 6H, 4R, 3ER, 5K, 0BB

Elsinore relied on the hot hands in their lineup for a pair of runs in the first inning as Justin Miller homered and Casey McElroy singled in Tommy Medica, but then the offense went cold during an early-morning matchup in Rancho.

Starting at every minor leaguer's favorite time, 10:35 a.m., Matt Andriese wasn't nearly as sharp as his last outing, giving up four runs in the first two innings before settling in a bit over the next three. The righty from Redlands avoided issuing a walk for the first time in two months and sports a strong 90:21 ratio in a team-leading 100.2 innings.

McElroy came off of his first back-to-back hitless games for the Storm with three singles to push his Cal League average back up to .381. No other Storm hitter had more than one hit, though Miller drew two walks.

TinCaps 6 Cedar Rapids 0

Key Stats: DH Peterson 3-5, RBI, CS; LF Gallic 3-5, RBI, R; RF Asencio 1-4,3B, 2RBI, CS; RHP Fetter 3IP, 1H, 0R, 1K, 1BB

Appearing in his first TinCaps game since 2009, Chris Fetter dealt three scoreless innings, setting the tone for three relievers who would follow him to combine on a three-hit shutout. Fetter, 26, underwent Tommy John surgery last July while working through his second year in the Cal League. The enormous righty has missed significant time to injury in each of the three seasons since he last wore a Ft. Wayne jersey.

Jace Peterson and Mike Gallic led a 13-hit attack for the TinCaps with three hits each. James Needy, Johnny Barbato and James Jones allowed four baserunners over the final six frames, with Needy picking up a win with three innings of work.

Eugene 3 Vancouver 1

Key Stats: 1B Kallunki 2-4, 2 2B; LHP Alger 3IP, 1H, 0R, 5K; LHP Nunn 1.1IP, 1H, 0R, 2K

Brandon Alger worked three scoreless innings for Eugene on Wednesday. Of course, that's what the lefty from Indiana Tech has done in six straight outings, three from the bullpen and three as a starter. The Padres' 26th-round pick last month has surrendered only nine hits and one unearned run through 20 professional innings with 19 strikeouts and only one walk.

Fellow lefty Christopher Nunn, who the club drafted two rounds earlier, has also gone scoreless through eight Northwest League appearances. The tall 21-year-old entered Wednesday with the tying runners on base and quickly induced a groundout to escape the jam. He struck out two in the eighth inning to push his season total to 19 in just 12.1 innings of work.

AZL Brewers 9 AZL Padres 4

Key Stats: LHP Fried 1.1IP 2H, 3R, 2ER, 2K, 1BB; LF Decker 2-4, HR, 2RBI

Max Fried will not carry a 0.00 ERA through his entire professional career. The number seven overall pick was charged with two earned runs in 1.1 innings of work during his fourth outing. The Harvard-Westlake star uncorked a wild pitch on a strikeout that would have gotten him out of the first inning, then threw away a pickoff attempt to push across an unearned.

In the second, the Padres' number one pick gave up a homer and a single after an inning-opening strikeout. He gave way to Bryan Rodriguez and the runner eventually came around on an error. It appears that the official scores incorrectly tallied that as an earned run, so Fried's ERA may be adjusted at some point this week.

Jaff Decker, continuing his rehab from plantar fasciitis, turned on a two-run homer to right in the first inning and later added a single. The 22-year-old outfielder is 4-for-14 with only one strikeout and two walks in his five games on the desert. He should be back in San Antonio next week if he doesn't have a further setback.
