When it comes to scouting for the draft, much of the hard work is done in the summer. That's why we're on the scene this summer, scouting the top amateur leagues, and showcases. As part of our 2013 draft coverage, we're providing team quality first-hand scouting reports on the names you need to know. Here's a report from the Cape Cod League, as we evaluate college righty, Trey Masek.

Name: Trey Masek

Events Scouted: Cape Cod League

Physical Description

Masek is not going to stand out physically as far as righty pitchers go. He doesn't have that kind of height. On the other hand, he has a strong lower half and he's a very good athlete. Physically though, this is about where Masek is going to be long term.

While he may not be the tallest right-hander in the world, Masek does a good job of creating some downhill plane. He is very sound mechanically, as he gathers well at his balance point and has outstanding arm speed. There's a little effort there, but the finish is clean.

The fastball is Masek's best weapon as he sits at 92-94 mph with some good two-seam run down in the zone. His command has continued to improve and he's become very good at spotting it on the edges of the zone.

Masek's fastball and the life it has make it his best pitch, but he also owns a plus curveball. It's a hard, 12-6 curveball that he's shown exceptional command of all summer. Thrown at 80-83 mph, it has the tightness and snap to be a swing and miss offering at the professional level.

The changeup isn't a featured part of his game right now, but it's already showing the potential to be a solid offering. Thrown at 81-83, the spin matches that of his fastball and he keeps his arm speed up well.

There will be some debate as to whether Masek should start or relieve. The way he looks right now, he's going to give you a fairly polished middle of the rotation starter. But, if things break a little differently, he has the potential to be a back of the bullpen reliever with two plus offerings.
