Kevin Siegrist headed a five-pitcher contingent that shut out Mesa 7-0 on the road.
Surprise's starter upped his record to 2-1 by limiting the Solar Sox to a hit and three free passes over three frames. Siegrist fanned four with five groundouts on 72 pitches, 39 for strikes.
The southpaw opened with two quick groundouts, 6-3 and 5-3, before yielding a line drive single to left. Siegrist coaxed a force at second for the final out. Mesa's number five hitter was plunked to start the second then watched as Siegrist recorded a swinging strikeout. The Buffalo, New York native issued the first of three base-on-balls to put two aboard before notching two more swinging K's.
The top of the Solar Sox' order came back up in the third with Siegrist again retiring the first batter on a groundout. Two walks followed before Siegrist quashed the mini-threat via a force at second and a called strikeout.
Mike O'Neill and Kolten Wong played in the field for St. Louis in the contest. O'Neill, back in his usual lead-off slot, singled twice in five at bats with one run scored and another knocked in. Wong recorded an identical offensive line while batting second.
After a first inning groundout, the left fielder reached in the third on a sharp grounder to first that was deflected by the pitcher and which moved the lead-off batter into scoring position. O'Neill was erased when Wong ground into a force at second. Wong reached third on an RBI single and wild pitch, but was stranded.
Both Cardinals produced in Surprise's fourth that saw the squad touch home six times. O'Neill came to the plate with one run across, runners at first and second and one out. His sharp line-drive single to right brought another across and put runners at the corners for Wong. Wong singled to right as well to knock in the runner from third and push O'Neill to second. O'Neill advanced to third on a balk and both crossed home ahead of Chris McGuiness (Texas) when the first baseman sent his fourth long ball of the AFL campaign over the left field wall.
