Orioles Name Minor League Staff
Ron Johnson returns for his second season as the manager at Triple-A Norfolk after guiding the Tides to a 74-70 mark in his first season in the Orioles organization in 2012. Johnson now has a 1,335-1,332 record in 19 seasons as a minor league manager. MIKE GRIFFIN will serve as pitching coach for the sixth consecutive season in the organization and fourth straight season in Norfolk. DENNY WALLING will serve as hitting coach for the Tides for the second consecutive season. Former major leaguer Jose Hernandez will serve as field coach for Norfolk after serving as field coach for Frederick in 2012, Delmarva in 2011 and the Gulf Coast Orioles in 2010.MARK SHIRES enters his 14th year as an athletic trainer in the Orioles' system and his seventh year at Norfolk. RYO NAITO will return for his third season as the Tides' strength and conditioning coach. GARY KENDALL will return for his third season as manager at Double-A Bowie. 2013 will be Kendall's 14th season in the organization and 10th season as a manager. Entering his eighth year in the Orioles organization (six with Frederick and one with Delmarva), BLAINE BEATTY will serve as pitching coach for the Baysox. Einar Diaz, entering his sixth year with the Orioles, will serve as hitting coach for the Baysox after spending 2012 as the field coach at Delmarva. Aaron Scott, in his 11th season in the organization, will serve as Bowie's athletic trainer for the third consecutive year. Strength and conditioning coach PAT ARMSTRONG returns for his third year in the organization and second year at Bowie. Former Orioles third baseman Ryan Minor will take over as manager at Frederick afterthree years as manager at Delmarva. 2013 will be Minor's sixth as a coach or manager in the organization. KENNIE STEENSTRA, who served as Frederick's pitching coach in 2009, will return to the Keys after three years in Bowie for his ninth season in the organization. TORRE TYSON will begin his first year in the organization as the hitting coach for the Keys. Tyson spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the New York Yankees' minor league defensive coordinator after four years as a minor league manager. 2013 will be Tyson's 10th season as a coach, manager or instructor in professional baseball. PAT WESLEY begins his 10th full season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles' organization and fifth with Frederick. CHRIS CECERE will serve as strength and conditioning coach for the Keys in his third year in the organization. In his first year in the Orioles organization, long-time major league coach LUIS PUJOLS will manage Class-A Delmarva. Pujols managed for three years in the Tigers and Astros organizations and managed the Detroit Tigers for 155 games on an interim basis in 2002.Also in his first year in the organization, Justin Lord will serve as the pitching coach for the Shorebirds. In his 19th season in the organization, BUTCH DAVIS will serve as hitting coach for the Shorebirds after serving the last seven years as the Orioles' roving outfield and bunting instructor. GREG SVARCZKOPF will serve as the Shorebirds' athletic trainer after three seasons as the strength and conditioning coach for Bowie and last year as an athletic trainer at the Orioles' Florida complex. Former major league catcher MATT MERULLO joins the Orioles organization as the manager for Short-season (A) Aberdeen in 2013.Former Oriole pitcher ALAN MILLS returns to Aberdeen for his second season as pitching coach. In his first year in the organization, Jon Matthews will serve as hitting coach for the IronBirds in 2013.TREK SCHULER begins his 14th season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles organization and his fifth in Aberdeen. ORLANDO GOMEZ will manage the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles in 2013 after three straight years with Frederick. 2013 will be Gomez's ninth season in the organization and seventh as a manager. After managing the GCL Orioles for the past four seasons, RAMON SAMBO will serve as the team's field coach in 2013. MILT MAY returns for his fourth season as hitting coach for the GCL Orioles. Former major leaguer WILSON ALVAREZ will serve as pitching coach for the GCL Orioles in his first year in the organization. Alvarez will serve as pitching coach for the Venezuelan club in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Elvis Morel will manage the Orioles' entry in the Dominican Summer League and will be assisted by pitching coaches ROBERT PEREZ and Dionis Pascual and hitting coach RAMON CARABALLO. BENNY ADAMES will serve as bench/outfield coach, while RUBEN FRANCISCO will serve as first base/baserunning coach and RAMON LUBO will oversee catchers and coach third base. LUDOVINO ALONZO MARTE will serve as athletic trainer for the DSL club, while JUAN SUAREZ will serve as strength and conditioning coach.. BRIAN GRAHAM enters his sixth season with the Orioles and first as Director of Player Development. RICK PETERSON will return for his second season as Director of Pitching Development and MIKE BOULANGER returns for his second year as Minor League Hitting Coordinator. Orioles Hall of Famer MIKE BORDICK will serve as a Special Assignment Instructor,while DON WERNER (catching) and Matt Martin (infield) will serve as roving instructors. Scott McGregor will spend his 12th year as a coach in the organization and second season as the Sarasota-based Rehabilitation Coordinator. DAVE SCHMIDT, in his 16th season in the organization, will serve as the Florida and Latin America Pitching Administrator for the Orioles,while FELIPE ALOU, JR. returns for his sixth year as Director of the Orioles' Dominican Academy. LEN JOHNSTON enters his 37th season with the Orioles organization, serving as the Administrator for Sarasota Operations. DAVE WALKER will begin his 11th year as Minor League Medical Coordinator and 20th season in the Orioles' farm system.
