Padres Camp Report March 30

Peoria, AZ: The San Diego Padres wrapped up minor league camp on Saturday with the Double-A and Triple-A squads both taking losses.

Tim Stuaffer got the start in the Triple-A affair and looked sharp. He worked in the low-90s with his two-seamer, putting it on the corners and filtering in both a slider and curveball with success.

Brad Boxberger lifted a fastball belt high that went into the left field bleachers for a two-run homer. Nick Vincent was sharp in his one inning of relief. The three-quarters delivery still gives batters fits – but the Padres would actually like to see him drop down even further.

Ronnie Richardson drove a ball into the right-center field gap and whirled around the bases for a triple. He would come in on a sacrifice fly.

After putting the first two men on base to begin the sixth, the Triple-A squad sent Cody Decker to the plate. A 6-4-3 double play followed with some of his family in the stands, and the rally officially came to a close with a called third strike. Decker did a great job behind the dish, blocking some balls and framing pitches nicely.

In the Double-A game, the Missions squad took a 7-3 loss – and their pitching squad saw the final inning rolled after a three-run homer off right-hander Dennis O'Grady.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps team will feature a number of first-rounders trying to make an impression as youngsters. The team will feature Max Fried, Walker Weickel, Zach Elfin and Joe Ross. Michael Kelly will also join the team once he returns to health. It may be the most exciting pitching staff ever assembled at one level, especially with the addition of Tayron Guerrero.

Jose DePaula and Juan Oramas have both looked fantastic this spring. One coming off injury an the other off visa issues, this group could be called upon by the big league squad if injuries again force San Diego to look below.
