MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: April 13

On a night when Edinson Volquez threw nearly 100 pitches without escaping the fourth inning, two top prospects show the system how it is done.

Fresno Grizzlies 3 – Tucson Padres 5

Key Statistics Robbie Erlin 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K also 1-2, 2B, RS, RBI at the plate; Dan Robertson 2-3, 2 RS, 3B, 2 BB; Travis Buck 3-4, 2B, 4 RBI

Prospect Watch: Erlin tried his best Houdini impersonation twice having runners on second and third with less than 2 outs, and only allowing one run to score. Despite the hits, Erlin managed to throw just 81 pitches, 57 for strikes…. Brad Boxberger rebounded from a few shaky outings by throwing two perfect innings… Robertson reached base four times, and is now leading the club in runs scored with seven… Kyle Blanks was not in the lineup for the first time all year. It might be because Blanks is 0 for his last 7 with four punch outs and needed a day off; or because he is getting called up when Quentin officially begins to serve his suspension.

San Antonio Missions 13 – Tulsa Drillers 2

Key Statistics Matt Andriese 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K also 1-3, RS, 2 RBI a the plate; Reymond Fuentes 2-5, 2B, RS, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB (5); Tommy Medica 2-6, HR (3), 2 RS, 2 RBI

Prospect Watch: While all the hype this year has gone to Smith and Roach, Andriese continues to impress. He was able to throw all of his pitches for strikes, and possibly even better for Padre fans, got hitters to swing early in the count and roll over sliders. Andriese threw only 74 pitches in his five innings, and outside of the fourth, did not allow multiple runners in any inning… Offense exploded for 15 hits. Fuentes, Medica, Blackwood, Rodriguez, and Bisson all had multihit games. Every starter 1-9 scored at least 1 run… Everett Williams did not play for the 2nd straight game… Going into tonights game the Missions had a minor league best 1.70 ERA.

Lake Elsinore Storm 10 – Inland Empire 66ers 1

Key Statistics James Needy 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; Jace Peterson 3-5, 2B, 3B, RS, RBI; Travis Jankowski 2-5, 2 RS, 2 SB (5); Kyle Gaedele 2-3, 2B, HR (3), 2 RS, 2 RBI, 2 BB

Prospect Watch: After starting the year with 5 hits in his first 30 at bats, Jace Peterson was a homerun shy of the cycle tonight. Peterson raised his extra-base total for the year from one to three… Spangenberg got his first night off of this year and his replacement B.J. Guinn hit a 2-run homerun in the sixth… Austin Hedges' backup, Robert Kral, is not hitting .529 this year (9 for 17) with a 1.737 OPS. The just turned twenty-four year old did hit .315 last year in Lake Elsinore in 22 games… James Needy showed glimpses of greatness, but was inconsistent and not economical with his pitches throwing nearly 80 pitches in just four innings.

. Fort Wayne TinCaps 6 – Lake County Captains 9

Key Statistics Justin Hancock 4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K; Brian Adams 2-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, SB

Prospect Watch: Hancock had a rough outing in his second start as a Tin Cap. He struggled to find the strike zone throughout the start. Like many young pitchers, when they cannot locate their pitches they try to overthrow causing the pitches to flatten out. A learning experience for Hancock… Dane Phillips had a rough day, going 0-4 at the plate with two strikeouts, and also having a passed ball that allowed for two runs to score in the fifth… Captains scored five unanswered runs in the final two innings to secure the win.
