MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: May 13

A tough day on the mound as Roach, Garces, and Weickel all failed to collect an out in the fifth inning. In addition Boxberger blew a three run lead in his return to Tucson. Despite all the pitching woes the organization still managed to split, going 2-2

Tucson Padres 6 – Round Rock Express 5 (10 innings)

Key Statistics RHP Thad Weber 7 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K; RHP Brad Boxberger 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K; RF James Darnell 2-4, 2B, RBI, BB.

Prospect Watch: RHP Brad Boxberger made his first appearance back in Tucson since being set down. In less than an inning he allowed more runs on more hits with more walks then he had in 3.2 innings in San Diego… After going 1-25, James Darnell collected his first multi-hit game in over a week. The RF/LF/3B/DH is still just hitting .224 in 14 games… Justin Miller received an emergency call up to AAA, and hasn't disappointed going four for his first six.

San Antonio Missions 3 – Corpus Christi Hooks 13

Key Statistics RHP Donn Roach 4+ IP, 10 H, 10 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3 HR (L, 2-4); SS Jeudy Valdez 2-4, HR (1), RBI; RF Reymond Fuentes 2-4 .

Prospect Watch: Another rough start for Donn Roach, a seemingly all or nothing pitcher. In the five starts his sinker has been working Roach has allowed zero or one runs per start. In the three other starts Roach has allowed 10 hits or more in each start. Roach may lack the secondary pitches needed to get through starts when the sinker is off. Luckily in such a deep system, Roach will be given plenty of time to make sure his sinker is more consistent from start to start… Reymond Fuentes has a staggering 1.049 OPS at home, but an abysmal .690 away OPS. Fuentes had been 0 for his last 11 on the road before collecting two hits tonight. Even with the two singles Fuentes still has just three extra base hits in 15 road games.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 4 – Lake Elsinore Storm 1

Key Statistics LHP Frank Garces 4 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K (L, 4-3); LF Luis Domoromo 2-4, HR (3), RBI.

Prospect Watch: The Storm managed just three hits in route to a loss that was more lopsided then the score indicated. RF Yeison Asencio snapped his seven game hit streak going 0-4 with two strikeouts. In his previous eight games Asencio had struck out only two times. Despite the hitless game, Asencio is still leading the club in doubles (11) and RBI (29).

Dayton Dragons 4 – Fort Wayne TinCaps 5

Key Statistics RHP Walker Weickel 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K; DH Brian Adams 1-4, HR (5), 2 RBI; LHP Chris Nunn 2 IP,2 K (W, 2-0); RHP Roman Madrid 1 IP, 2 K (S, 6)

Prospect Watch: Fort Wayne is filled with great pitching prospects… Joe Ross, Max Fried, Zach Eflin, etc… but no one talks about Roman Madrid. The TinCaps closer has yet to allow an earned run in 16.2 innings. He has a sub one WHIP, is 4-0, and is 6 for 6 in save opportunities. Since being drafted in the 7th round of last year's draft, Madrid is 11-0, 19 saves, 54 innings, 32 hits, 17 walks, and 62 strikeouts. This equates to a 2.00 ERA, 0.907 WHIP, and a .165 BAA.
