MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: May 19

The starting pitching was a mess, the offense was quiet, and the defense gave away extra outs and bases. Not hard to see how the system got shut out on Sunday.

Iowa Cubs 7 Tucson Padres 3

Key Statistics: RF Dan Robertson 3-5, R, RBI, SB(12); LF Brandon Allen 2-3, SF, 2RBI; SS Gregorio Petit 2-5, 2B;

Prospect Watch: Wilfredo Boscan, who came over from the Rangers in exchange for reliever Cory Burns last winter, was blasted for seven runs over only four innings of work. The righty gave up a pair of homers as part of the nine-hit attack Iowa mounted against him. The 23-year-old Venezuelan has worked 18 innings each in both Double-A and Triple-A so far this year, posting nearly identical lines at both levels. … Shortstop Gregorio Petit, who entered the season with a .670 OPS in more than 1,900 Triple-A plate appearances, continues to outperform for Tucson. The 28-year-old journeyman collected the T-Pad's only extra-base hit and sports a 329/369/438 line for the year. … Yasmani Grandal came off the bench in the ninth inning and struck out. With no DH slot in the game, he didn't get the day game start after catching the night before.

Frisco 8 San Antonio Missions 4

Key Statistics: LF Everett Williams 2-4, 2B, HR(2); LHP Jose DePaula 6.2IP, 7H, 6R, 1ER, 5K, 0BB

Prospect Watch: Jose DePaula threw a season-high 94 pitches as he worked into the seventh inning, but the lefty was unable to overcome some shoddy defense behind him and was tagged for five unearned runs. DePaula continued to show great control, racking up five more strikeouts without a walk to take his season numbers to 39:4 in 50 innings. A full third of the runs he has given up this year have been unearned. … Everett Williams extended his hitting streak to a modest three games as he had two of the club's extra-base hits. He has run incredibly hot and cold this season, and appears to be getting untracked again after a frigid run in early May.

Stockton Ports 5 Lake Elsinore Storm 0

Key Statistics: LF Luis Domoromo 2-3, BB, SB; RF Yeison Asencio 2-4; LHP Frank Garces 4IP, 5H, 4R, 3ER, 6K, 0BB

Prospect Watch: Lefty Frank Garces continues to collect strikeouts at an impressive pace, adding six more over four innings on Sunday to extend his team leading total to 46 in 37 innings. When opponents have made contact, they've been able to do some damage. The 23-year-old surrendered a pair of homers early and, with virtually no offensive support, was tagged with his second straight loss. … Yeison Asencio had two more singles on Sunday. Only two of his 21 hits this month have been for extra-bases, even as he's virtually eliminated his strikeouts. Randy Smith recently noted that he needs to find the sweet spot of not being too aggressive while still not trying to be something he's not.

Lake County Captains 7 Ft. Wayne TinCaps 5

Key Statistics: 2B Maxx Tissenbaum 2-5, 2RBI; RHP Walker Weickel 3.2IP, 9H, 7R, 4K, 2BB; RHP Michael Kelly 1IP, 2K

Prospect Watch: Walker Weickel had his worst professional outing Sunday, giving up a career-high seven runs on a season-low 3.2 innings of work. The Captains victimized the big righty in every aspect of the game as he surrendered nine hits – including a pair of homers - and walked two. Once runners were on base, they ran at will against him and catcher Dane Phillips, swiping seven bases. Weickel still hasn't touched the velocity he showed early in his draft year as a professional. … Maxx Tissenbaum entered the game in a 4-for-49 slump since he reached a season-high .329 average on May 2. Through the early part of the year, he's been a streaky hitter, so he can hope the two singles on Sunday will be the start of another positive run.
