MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: July 6

With Yasmani Grandal going down Rene RIvera, a 13 year veteran of the minor leagues, gets the call. The TinCaps rally to win while the Ems barely hold on and who is Rod Boykin?

Prospect Watch: The big news is that starting Padres' catcher Yasmani Grandal suffered a possible ACL tear on his knee in Washington DC yesterday which had thirteen year minor league veteran Rene Rivera on a plane before the game. Rivera is hitting .343/.382/.474 and had a brief stint with Seattle in the big leagues and longer one with the Twins in 2011 for 45 games where he hit .144...Anthony Bass had his longest outing of the year but also gave up his second most earned runs. Prospect Watch: Lee Orr hadn't homered since April 21 and has been losing playing time to Robert Kral at first base with Austin Hedges coming back from injury. The Storm have been trying to get him into games at right field. Orr had a big April with an OPS of 1.141 but slumped in May with a .442 OPS and in June at .432...With a pair of walks tonight Robert Kral now has an on-base percentage of .438...While other Padres' pitching prospects are getting more attention James Needy is quietly turning in a very solid season. He's leading the Storm in innings pitched and has a 3.42 ERA in the Cal League. Tonight was the typical Needy performance, he gave up some hits, didn't strike many people out and only gave up a run in five inning pitched.

His defense is a little rough with 12 errors in 32 games. The Iona College graduate was taken by the Padres in the eighteenth round of the 2012 draft and bounced around a bit this year before settling in at the Summit City. Last year in Eugene he hit .231...Madrid got his thirteenth save in fifteen opportunities and has held the Midwest League to a .194 batting average. His only real negative statistic is 21 walks in 38.2 innings which is a little heavy for a closer.

RHP Michael Kelly, a first round supplemental pick in 2011, again struggled giving four earned runs in the top third of the ninth inning. Kelly now has a 7.36 ERA but is a much better pitcher than what we are seeing now...Adam Climber got the save the hard way. Key Statistics CF Rod Boykin 2-3, BB; RHP Griffin Russell (L, 0-1) 4.0 IP 3 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 7 Ks.

Prospect Watch: Centerfielder Rod Boykin is one of the players that Padres' Scouting Director Chad MacDonald loves, an athlete with plus speed. Out of Edgewood Academy in Alabama San Diego was able to buy him out of his football commitment and get him in the organization after selecting him in the twelfth round of this year's draft . To go along with the cartoon statistics these types of players usually have Boykin his .552 in his senior year of high school.
