Edwards debut, 7/28 Cubs recap

C.J. Edwards dominated in his Cubs' debut tossing five innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts, including the first seven he faced. Javier Baez hit a pair of homers, Kris Bryant blasted his second homer, and Armando Rivero fanned five for his first save.

Fun day in the minors for Cubs fans. Homers by Javier Baez and Kris Bryant, C.J Edwards racking up K's in his debut, Armando Rivero heating up his right arm, and even Dillon Maples has gone 10 straight innings without a walk. Rubi Silva extended his hit streak to 14 games and Zeke DeVoss upped his on-base streak to 20 games.

C.J. Edwards fanned the first seven hitters he faced in his Cubs organizational debut as the 21-year-old right-hander got the start Sunday for Daytona against Palm Beach. Acquired along with Mike Olt and Justin Grimm for Matt Garza, Edwards was also making his High-A debut and he didn't disappoint. He tossed five shutout innings allowing an infield single and finished with a line of 5IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 8K. Edwards said in an interview before the game he was excited for the opportunity and liked to go after hitters and get ahead in the count. That's exactly what he did throwing first-pitch strikes to 11/17 he faced. "New team, same C.J." he told Daytona play-by-play announcer Cody Dunlap after the game. Edwards said he doesn't try to strike hitters out but goes right at them, relying on his defense. He said he put his faith and trust in catcher Chadd Krist in his first start for Daytona, and threw what he called. More on Edwards' start in Daytona game recap
