MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: August 16

Juan Oramas and Joe Ross each had strong outings, but neither got any support from their offense as three different affiliates were held under five hits.

Sacramento River Cats 5 Tucson Padres 3

Key Statistics: CF Reymond Fuentes 2-5, SB; 1B Brandon Allen 2-3, 3B, BB; RHP Anthony Bass 5IP, 8H, 3ER, 4K, 1ER; RHP Brad Boxberger 2IP, 0H, 0R, 4K

Prospect Watch: Cameron Maybin got his rehab assignment back on track Saturday after missing 10 games with a flare-up in his knee. Appearing as a designated hitter, he went 1-for-5 with a strikeout. … With Maybin sidelined, Rey Fuentes continued his redoubtable performance in center and at the plate. The 22-year-old had two more hits Friday, just as he has in six of his seven contests since getting promoted.

Northwest Arkansas Naturals 2 San Antonio Missions 1 in 12

Key Statistics: SS Jeudy Valdez 1-5, HR, 2K; LHP Juan Oramas 5.2IP, 4H, 0R, 7K, 1BB

Lefty Juan Oramas seems to be finding his stride as he continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery last June. The 23-year-old from Mexico worked 5.2 scoreless innings, racking up seven more strikeouts. Since getting shelled in his second appearance, Oramas has given up seven earned runs in 32.2 innings with an impressive 39:9 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Virtually forgotten outside the organization, Oramas has both the stuff and the mental makeup to be starting effectively in the majors next year.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 13 Lake Elsinore Storm 7

Key Statistics: SS Jace Peterson 2-4, 3B, BB, CS; DH Corey Adamson 2-3, 2 3B, BB; RHP Justin Hancock 4H, 9H, 7ER, 7K, 4BB

Prospect Watch: Jace Peterson, who like virtually every Storm hitter has been streaky at the plate this year, is back on an upswing. The top shortstop in the system was 2-for-4 with a triple Friday and is hitting .378/.531/.622. Even when he's had down stretches, he's maintained a fantastic contact rate, striking out in only about 12 percent of of his plate appearances and maintaining almost a 1-to-1 walk rate with it. … Gap power, plus speed, and wide-open Cal League outfields are a good recipe for triples, which Corey Adamson figured out quickly. The left-handed hitting Aussie had a pair of three-baggers in four trips to the plate and has hit in three of four games since joining the Storm.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 4 Ft. Wayne TinCaps 0

Key Statistics: RHP Joe Ross 6IP, 3H, 0R, 3K, 2BB

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps managed four singles as they got swept by the Rays' affiliate and continued their long slog through the second half of the season. Joe Ross bounced back from a rough outing last time out, working six scoreless innings. Perhaps most promising for the righty is that he worked out of a jam in the fifth. He opened the frame by giving up a single and walk, but after a sacrifice moved the runners up, Ross came back to get a strikeout and a grounder to escape. Earlier in the season, the former first-rounder was having trouble keeping focus with his back against the wall.

Eugene Emeralds 5 Everett Aquasox 1

Key Statistics: LHP Erik Schoenrock 3IP, 1H, 0R, 3K, 1BB; RHP Kyle Lloyd 5IP, 3H, 1ER, 7K, 2BB

Prospect Watch: After stretching out a bit in July, lefty Erik Schoenrock is now having his innings significantly limited. The 11th-round pick worked exactly three innings for the fourth straight outing, surrendering only one hit. He didn't allow any balls out of the infield Saturday and his slingshot delivery has been getting a ton of groundballs all year. … Switch-hitter Ronnie Richardson had a single, two walks and was hit by a pitch in five trips to the plate. He's been fantastic against righties all season, hitting .330/.500/.495, but has only a 733 OPS against lefties. Perhaps he and Rico Noel can be melded for one uber-leadoff prospect?

AZL Cubs 6 AZL Padres 0

Key Statistics: 3B Dustin Peterson 1-4, 2B; LHP Payton Baskette 4IP, 5H, 2ER, 2K, 1BB

Prospect Watch: Second-rounder Dustin Peterson had the club's only extra-base hit, a double to left with two outs in the ninth. The Phoenix-area native has gotten his average up over .300 after a slow start to his career, but has only eight extra-base hits in over 150 pro plate appearances. … Greg Gonzalez might be ready to go back out to Elsinore in his latest effort to come back from last year's arm injury. The righty struck out two more in his inning of work.
